Paper Money Guaranty (PMG) introduced a special label for tickets to the Kuala Lumpur International Numismatic Fair, which was held Oct.13-15, 2023, in Malaysia. The show was presented by Trigometric, a leading numismatic business in Southeast Asia and an Official Submission Center for PMG. These tickets, or “test notes,” celebrate the 50th anniversary of the royal visit of Queen Elizabeth II to Malaysia in 1972 aboard the HMS Britannia. The ticket’s obverse shows an image of Queen Elizabeth II, while the reverse features a vibrant image of the Britannia. Archives International Auctions announced their 89th auction and they will be presenting the Huntsville Collection. The collection consists of rare Arkansas and Missouri Civil War Obsolete scrip notes, Arkansas Civil War Treasury Warrants, and a selection of Cherokee Nation and Indian Territory scrip notes from the 1850s-‘60s. According to the auction catalog, which can be found online at the auction house’s website archivesinternational.com, highlights of the auction include 24 different Arkansas Scrip notes from 14 different issuers, 5 Cherokee Nation or Indian Territory notes including 4 historic 1862 Cherokee Nation scrip notes. Shawn Hewitt believes more collectors should become aware of the wide and narrow overprint varieties on the popular Series of 1899 black eagle silver certificates. Notice the different placements of the large blue numeral 1 over the left serial numbers in this pair. The change was made at the end of 1906 to improve the aesthetics of the note during the Vernon-Treat era. It occurred about two thirds of the way through the M-serial number block. The changeover was not sharp because there is mixing of the varieties between serials M57… and M65…, probably owing to the change being implemented at different times on the various overprinting presses. The block letters used on Vernon-Treat note were M, N, R, T, so the changeover occurred early during their tenure so the earlier…

The Long Beach Auction had a great many surprises. The Lacrosse 1875 Lazy Two in PMG 65 sold a year or two ago for $25,000. It had sold previously for $23,000 so I felt this was a good high figure in our price guide, as that Lacrosse note is the most common Lazy Two with about 52 known specimens. At Long Beach one in PMG 65 sold for $52,800. Was this a slug fest between two serious collectors or an indication of how expensive our notes are becoming? I am glad I bought my Lacrosse Lazy Two in VF at a Hickman/Oaks auction at Memphis in 1989 or 1990 for $650. It’s worth probably $3,500 to $4,000 now but is a 65 now worth over $50,000? Inclement weather in the form of day-long rain dampened attendees but didn’t dampen their spirits as they took part in the Oct. 13 dedication of the Chester L. Krause Legacy Park in Iola, Wis. October 13 was the 71st anniversary of the first issue of Numismatic News. More than 200 people from the coin hobby, old car hobby, Legacy Park committee, donors and former Krause Publications employees poured into Iola Historical Society’s (IHS) Machine Shed to honor Chester L. Krause, founder of Krause Publications. The new park is located at the corner of Chet Krause Drive and Water Street, directly across from the first Krause Publications building. Arthur Smith sent a snapshot of a $5 1882 brown back from The First National Bank of Wapakoneta, Ohio, charter 3157, bearing sheet number 1274, a denomination that is missing from the Van Belkum issuance data in our catalogs. I asked Lee Lofthus to find out why from the National Currency and Bond Ledgers in the National Archives. This required that he find the last entries for the 1882 issues for the bank, which were written in 1904. He responded in due course with a cell phone photo of the page, a page that was long ago destroyed by water damage dating from when that ledger was at the bottom of a pile that appears to have been soaked by sewage overflow before they were shipped to the National Archives.…

Celebrate bank notes issued for the next animal in the lunar calendar with a new certification label offered by Paper Money Guaranty (PMG). The PMG Year of the Dragon label is the latest addition to the popular Lunar Series of special labels, which feature the Chinese Zodiac. The PMG label showcasing a red dragon is available for bank notes issued by a variety of countries celebrating the Year of the Dragon or any note dated 2024. Mongolia has already released Year of the Dragon notes and many other countries will be offering their own issues. Two rare Sarawak bank notes each realized over $80,000 in a recent sale. They were among hundreds of notes in the Spink auction that took place on Oct. 7-8, 2023. Topping the auction was a Sarawak, Government of Sarawak 1929 100 Dollars graded PMG 20 Very Fine (CSS96A, lot 157), which realized HKD660,000 (about $84,000). Only a handful of these notes are known, and this is the only issued example in the PMG Population Report. It is the highest denomination ever issued by Sarawak, which was ruled by British soldier James Brooke and his family for just over a century, beginning in 1841. The Stack’s Bowers and Ponterio October 2023 Hong Kong Sale was among their largest bank note sales to date and featured two special sessions, the Keith Austin Collection of Swatow Notes and Other Properties, and the London Chelsea Collection of People’s Bank Banknotes. Both sessions saw tremendous results. The Keith Austin Collection was highlighted by a 1898 100 Cash or 7 Mace Silver in lot 20037 that realized $13,200. A 1919 5 Dollars from the HSBC in a PMG 58EPQ fetched $9,000 in lot 20162 while an equally graded example brought $8,400 in lot 20161.
