I hope you have a very Happy Holiday Season. Santa Notes are interesting and pretty pricy. I managed to find a Santa vignette that is frequently on Santa notes, but I got it on a vignette. I enjoy picking up vignettes with images that appear on notes. I have vignettes that appear on Fractional notes, Nationals, and other Large Size notes. They allow me to admire the engraving without the wear and tear of circulation on scarce notes. I collect on a budget after all, and these vignettes help build exhibits when I show them at major shows. Exhibits seem to be out of vogue lately, as various shows have deleted them or minimized their importance at shows. You are not likely to find vignettes at local shows, but rather…

Many collectible bank notes and coins are included in a two-part Trigometric auction focused on rarities from Southeast Asia. Session 1 of the auction closes on Nov. 25, 2023, and Session 2 closes on Nov. 26, 2023. The top lot is a Malaysia, Bank Negara ND (1976-81) 1,000 Ringgit graded PMG 58 Choice About Uncirculated (Session 2, lot 2167), which has an estimate of RM44,000 to RM60,000 (about $9,300 to $13,000). The 1,000 Ringgit, the highest denomination ever issued by Malaysia, was discontinued over 20 years ago due to an economic crisis and is prized by collectors today. As late as the 1950s, one occasionally heard an older person remark that something was “not worth a Continental.” The speaker probably had no idea of the historical meaning, this merely being a phrase whose origin had been lost to the average person. The discovery of a new micro back 637 variety is always a red-letter day. Robert Calderman, author of Cherry Picker’s Corner for Paper Money and owner of the most comprehensive collection of 637 varieties, picked this really tasty cherry from a Facebook Group Auction in September 2023. What he spotted was the first $5 1934C Federal Reserve star note from any district bearing micro back plate 637. It is a mule; that is, the size of the plate serial numbers on the face and back differ wherein in this case the face plate serial number is macro and the 637-back micro. Beatrice, Neb. is 45 miles straight south of Lincoln, Neb. and 15 miles above the Kansas line on US 77. The population of the place is something above 12,000. The First National Bank there had a long and rich run of notes. Undoubtedly not noticed by anyone in the bank, they suffered an interesting mistake in the plate dates that appeared on their Series of 1882 and 1902 issues. The bank was organized April 30, 1877, and chartered May 12th. When the bank came up for its first 20-year extension of corporate life in 1897, the convention was to display the date of extension as the plate date on the new series of notes that would be issued thereafter. Newark Valley is a village of just under 1,000 people in Tioga County, N.Y. The village is 13 miles northwest of Binghamton. It was named after Newark, N.J. The town name on the $20 note was set in Gothic type at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing when Bureau personnel were preparing the layouts for 6-subject stopgap electrotype plates that were made by the Government Printing Office. At the time, the BEP was in the rush of converting to the production of small size nationals, and Barnhart Brothers & Spindler, the contractor for logotype overprinting plates, was seriously backlogged. Obsolete notes are known for being quite colorful and fun since the issuers could choose their own designs. Printing companies would offer stock images for banks to choose from, and some of these designs included Santa Claus. Obsolete bank notes were used from the founding of the U.S. through the Civil War when the U.S. Treasury began to take over the printing and created standardized currency. Banks had a large selection of vignettes to choose from including animals, Native Americans, landmarks, and patriotic symbols such as Lady Liberty and the eagle. Christmas was declared an official holiday by many states in the mid-1800s, and to celebrate many banks decided to create Santa Claus currency.
