Bidding is underway for Session 1 and Session 2, which focus on rarities from Southeast Asia and conclude Aug. 24-25, 2024. Among the highlights is a Malaysia, Bank Negara ND (1967-72) 1 Ringgit Color Trial Specimen graded PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated (lot 2175), with an estimate of RM28,000 to RM40,000 (about $6,100 to $8,700). PMG has certified only a handful of these Color Trial Specimens of the lowest catalog number of the lowest denomination of the Malaysian Ringgit, which was introduced in 1967 to replace the Malaya and British Borneo Dollar. The biggest currency flash at the July 11-13, 2024, Summer FUN Show in Orlando was the unveiling of this new-to-the-census $5 Red Seal from Cherokee, Territory of Oklahoma. I wasn’t at the show but thanks to the speed of the internet, I started hearing about a new Oklahoma territorial being flaunted on the bourse floor just about as soon as it hit. Its image arrived in short order. The owner never was revealed to me but one source told me it had already been consigned to the Heritage Signature Auction to be held in conjunction with the August 2024 American Numismatic Association World’s Fair of Money Convention in Chicago. The Philippines has had shortages of coins and bank notes for years. There have been several campaigns through which the central bank has encouraged the public to use or deposit their personal hoards. This latest effort is aimed primarily at significantly worn currency that needs to be replaced. In addition, BSP Dagupan Branch Area Director Ofelia Viray has acknowledged exchanging unfit money helps detect counterfeits while ensuring bank notes and coins in circulation are of good quality. With the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825, large numbers of immigrants were able to travel inland to new areas of the United States to obtain land and settle. Many of these people were Germans and they tended to settle in areas with large numbers of other Germans. Not surprisingly, they settled in areas where Germans had already settled and retained German customs, religions and cultural practices. By the 1880s they were a majority in several cities. Over the course of the summer, Spink & Sons held four auctions in conjunction with the Bank of England. The four auctions sold low serial King Charles III bank notes-£5, £10, £20 and £50 notes. The auctions raised £914,127 ($1.17 million U.S.) for ten different charities. These include the bank’s three current ‘charities of the year’ as well as an additional seven previous charities of the year that did not benefit from the proceeds of a charity polymer bank note auction held since 2016. The current three charities of the year are The Childhood, The Trussell Trust and Shout (powered by the charity Mental Health Innovations). The allure is obvious, $1,000 is a lot of money – even now when inflation has taken away much of its purchasing power, a $1,000 bill makes everyone stop and take notice. This fabulous pair is from a New Jersey bank that had a circulation of only $12,500 during its entire note-issuing life. The town name caught my eye. South River is a borough in Middlesex County with a 2020 census of 16,118. The town is located halfway between New York City and Trenton. Early on, the area was referred to as South River Landing. What is now South River was originally organized as the town of Washington within East Brunswick Township on Feb. 23, 1870.
