Tawny owl
Strix aluco DID YOU KNOW? We’re more likely to hear it than see it. In winter, its familiar ‘twit-twoo’ call is actually two calls – the ‘kee-wick’ of the female, followed by the male response, ‘tu-woo’.
DIET The tawny owl has a varied diet, eating anything from bats, mice, moles, rabbits, rats, shrews and voles, to amphibians and small birds such as blackbirds, sparrows, starlings and thrushes. In rural areas, its meals are largely made up of small mammals – in urban areas, small birds and rodents are most likely to be taken. When hunting, the tawny owl relies on its sight and hearing, and uses its talons only during the attack.
