You can create a wildlife corner in even the smallest courtyard, and it doesn’t have to be an unruly burst of unmown grass and native wildflowers or a scrub thicket. Just one large container will suffce, attracting bees, butterflies, hoverflies and other insects. All it has to do is satisfy the three prime needs of invertebrate wildlife: shelter to roost or hibernate in, nectar for insects, and food for various caterpillars.
We used a nectar-rich nepeta, hardy geranium, polemonium, salvia, achillea and lavenders to support a range of pollinating insects. The pot stands on a platform of bricks and logs, with the gaps stuffed with straw, where insects can shelter in winter. Two ‘bee hotels’ also provide nesting sites for solitary bees.
