Once the risk of hard frosts has passed, you can cut back hardy fuchsias and other ‘sub-shrubs’. These plants are half-way between herbaceous perennials, which die back to ground level in winter, and shrubs, which have a permanent woody structure.
These plants should be pruned annually, otherwise they can become leggy and liable to splitting under the weight of new growth. In colder parts of the UK, or in harsh winters, the stems may have been killed right down to ground level, but will re-sprout in spring.
