Blooming for three or four weeks, exotic amaryllis flowers can be red, pink, white, orange or even boldly striped and make the perfect Christmas house plant. Planted in mid- to late-September, amaryllis (Hippeastrum) should be in flower for Christmas without the need for chilling. Some striking varieties include ‘Mont Blanc’ (white), ‘Red Dragon’ (red) and ‘Apple Blossom’ (pink). Grow in compost, or a vase of water. To keep your plants happy, choose a spot where they’ll be at a temperature of around 21°C in bright light on a windowsill, but avoid direct sun.
