The great collaboration
Hestercombe, in Somerset, combines Georgian landscape and Edwardian formal gardens. A collaboration between Gertrude Jekyll and Sir Edwin Lutyens, the formal garden is one of the best examples of their work. Enter through the pergola, dappled with sunlight on bright days, leading to the Great Plat, a sunken parterre designed by the duo. Elegant planting is neatly framed with stone, creating repeating shapes across the lawn, with views of the landscape beyond. While Lutyens focused on the design and form of the parterre, Jekyll chose the plants, for elegant colour all year.
