October round-up
Dusk, the eagerly-awaited debut album by trumpeter and flugelhornist James Copus, features his own compositions. And with Tom Cawley (piano), Conor Chaplin (bass) and Jason Brown (drums), it adds up to a formidable, well-integrated unit. Although it falls within the modern-jazz mainstream, they sound fresh, exciting and consistently interesting and Copus blisters the paint or creates elegant, laid-back lines with equal conviction.
