Achieving Mindfulness You may have heard the term “mindfulness” tossed around. But what is mindfulness, exactly? Mindfulness is simply the act of being present. But if you’re a planner—or a worrier—like me, you may have a difficult time being in the present moment, focusing on the here and now. As crafters, though, just the simple act of forcing ourselves to sit still long enough to bead (or knit or crochet) is engaging in mindfulness. It slows our minds and bodies and focuses our thoughts, whether for a few moments or a few hours at a time. Bonnie Brooks—illustrator, wife, mother, and grandmother— has been part of the fabric of Beadwork magazine for nearly a decade. Bonnie passed away on October 9th, and her loss has been felt both professionally and personally by all of us here at Beadwork—as well as in the beading community at large. Everyone who’s been on the Beadwork staff has interacted with Bonnie in one way or another during their tenure. Q: How did you get started beading? A: My very first job was in a store that sold handmade Native American jewelry. We had a jeweler to do repairs such as soldering and stone setting. I learned to string and do some basic wire wrapping to help him. After graduating from college, I found my work as a high school teacher and a caseworker emotionally draining, and I realized that I needed a creative outlet.
