1 Find chords First, we need some chords or a melody. That‘s easy to generate with the Multi-Note device. Load it onto an empty track and select the Chords Get Alive preset. Then add a Key Filter and choose the desired scale and key — we picked C Lydian. We chose to use a Sampler with the Lagerbier Hell preset as an instrument because of its moody feeling. 2 vCreate notes As MULTI-NOTE does most of the job, we just need to find suitable chord variations, for example C#3, B2, C#3, B2 and D3 (as seen in the picture above). 1 Inspiration for Ambient If you combine several sounds from Nostromos BE, you can create a short Ambient track in no time flat. We start with a pad such as 25 - Synesthesia, with which we play a sequence of notes. Since the sound is already quite complex, we‘ll only play single notes, no chords. The bass sound 08 - VectorBass provides a rich foundation. 2 Dull bass In combination with other sounds, however, it can be too rich in overtones. Use the Cut control to quickly remedy this and make room in the mix for other sounds. The bass plays the same notes as our pad sound. Experiment with the octave position here. 1 FM synth as a base We‘ll build such a bass using the FM-4. Although the process is quite complex the first time because of the many modulations, the synth then permanently creates new sounds and nuances, so you don‘t have to start from scratch for each track. Three oscillators form the basis, with number two and three modulating the first. 2 FM matrix How much one oscillator influences another is determined in the 5x4 matrix. There, in the first row, we set the value to 141 in the second column and to 217 in column three. We set all other cells to 0. Uwyn MIDI Tape Recorder MIDI Tape Recorder is a free open source software that emulates a multitrack tape recorder - but not for recording audio signals, but MIDI data. This sounds a bit crazy, at first. After all, MIDI recordings can be edited much more flexibly in the DAW, whether in pitch, length or speed. And for decades, developers have been tinkering with the ability to post-process audio recordings in as much detail as MIDI. But the extensive processing possibilities of MIDI data, especially quantization, have a price. That‘s because it requires that data to be squeezed into a specific grid.
