Human rights are what we want out of life for ourselves and our loved ones. The genius of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, co-drafted by Chinese diplomat Peng Chung Chang, is that it extends the enjoyment of dignity, justice, freedom and peace to everyone, even to people who could have been our enemy. Article 1 of the declaration, which is imbued with Chinese thought, states: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. On November 19, the People’s Bank of China (PBC), the country’s central bank, announced it will allow Mastercard NUCC Information Technology (Beijing) Co. Ltd., a joint venture between Mastercard and Chinese firm NetsUnion Clearing Corp., to conduct bank clearing business in China. This approval made Mastercard the second international bank card clearing institution operating in the Chinese market, following American Express, which was approved in 2020, and one of the three bank card clearing institutions in China, along with China UnionPay, the country’s largest bank card payment processor. Bingz, a Chinese crispy burger brand with about 500 stores in China, opened its first North American store in Canada in 2021. Its star product is the adapted roujiamo, a Chinese snack resembling a hamburger with shredded meat and mild peppers stuffed into flat buns that originated in Shaanxi Province in northwest China. XIAOMI FOUNDER DONATES TO ALMA MATER Smartphone maker Xiaomi’s founder Lei Jun donated 1.3 billion yuan ($183.7 million) to his alma mater Wuhan University on November 29, on the 130th anniversary of the university’s founding. The donation is the highest-ever to a Chinese higher learning institution by an individual contributor. The funds will support basic research in the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry, literature, history and philosophy, as well as scientific and technological innovations in computing science, and the nurture of undergraduates. Here’s a recent news clipping that may not have been breaking news, but still got a lot of attention: On November 24, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced that China had expanded its list of unilateral visa-free countries. From December 1, the trial policy will be in effect for one year, until November 30, 2024, and allow holders of ordinary passports from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Malaysia to enter China without a visa and stay in the country for up to 15 days.
