WHEN I PICTURE my perfect trail, my mind always wanders to a certain ribbon of singletrack in Santa Cruz, California. It dips and swerves through the redwood forest at just the right mellow cant to let you maintain constant launching speed. I WAS JUST FOUR DAYS into my twoweek mission to ride the exact same climb every day when I began to fall for the Fuji Gran Fondo. The bike had already helped me crush two events—the endlessly rolling Gran Fondo New Jersey and our own fondo-style BICYCLING Fall Classic—which wasn’t exactly breaking news considering the model’s name broadcasts that this is its optimal type of ride. IT’S HARD TO believe that just a year ago I was still sustaining ire for wearing a fannypack on the trail. This ’90s staple had been back in fashion for a while, but it was still mocked by many as an emblem of hardcore “endur-bros.” I believed fannypacks could be for everyone—at least, everyone who didn’t want to wear a sweaty hydration pack but needed to carry more than their pockets could hold. Yet it was surprisingly hard to find a good one for riding. I tried models with water reservoirs, but they were bulky and slid around. HERE’S WHAT I KNOW: Riding a bicycle brings me joy. But why this hobby over, say, building a 1:64 scale model train set based on the movie Snowpiercer? It’s not obvious.
