I try to stay fit so I don’t have to get fit for big rides. That means putting in pretty consistent weekly hours on the bike year-round, with some variations in the winter (not much racing, grim weather) and summer (so much else going on). I’ve found success with pyramidal training: 60 to 75 percent of my rides are easy, 20 to 30 percent are moderate, and 5 to 10 percent are really hard. The whole point of suspension is that it moves, allowing the bike to roll more smoothly over terrain, which in turn provides enhanced traction, control, and comfort. Even though suspension’s benefit comes from its movement, there is a lot of effort by brands put into making it move less, or not at all. Antisquat, lockouts, climb modes, pedaling platforms, and more: All of it is designed to limit or stop suspension movement.
