Eurasian Scops Owl, Killay, Glamorgan, 6-12 December 2025
FOR the second time within the space of a year, a twitchable Eurasian Scops Owl was discovered during the depths of the long, cold British midwinter nights. Following hot on the heels of the well-watched bird in Broadstairs, Kent (see Birdwatch 392: 9), last winter, another Scops was found at Killay, Glamorgan, in early December.
Although originally found and photographed during daylight hours on 6th, the Killay owl was relocated that night and showed consistently after darkness fell for the following six evenings, but not thereafter. The bird could easily be located each evening using thermal-imaging devices, allowing birders to track its movements despite the darkness.
