Was The Knife Crockett’s? I enjoyed part three of “The Sea of Mud Knife” by James. L. Batson in the May BLADE® very much. I am a part-time knifemaker living in Hollywood, California. I am very interested in antique bowie knives. As for whether or not the Sea of Mud Knife belonged to Davy Crockett: My thought is that James Black made the knife and gave it to Crockett because Davy was a celebrity. Or, you could say men of quality recognize men of quality. Meanwhile, the knife subsequently was taken as a souvenir by a Mexican soldier, who discarded it at the Sea of Mud, not realizing the knife’s true value. Layer by layer we create our lives and selectively—or not—bring forward and leave behind aspects of our past. What we leave exposed is frequently what we are judged on, and it sculpts the image people see when they look our way. Pronounced “moe-ka-may ga-nay,” mokume-gane—or mokume as it is more commonly known—is all about layering as well. For me it’s simply another component of my work, but within itself it’s about color and pattern. In short, you stack a variety of different metals, bond them together, forge them down, pattern the material by cutting then forging, or forging then cutting, and expose the various colors that lie beneath. I figured the best way to review four bird and trout knives was to—wait for it—get some trout and game birds. Unfortunately there were no ducks, turkey, quail or doves in season in Texas, which is where we were visiting family. That being the case, we dressed in camo to get in the spirit of things and stalked down to the supermarket where we reduced some chickens to possession. Got clip-point burnout, the spear-point blues or drop-point doldrums? Are the traditional blade styles not doing it for you anymore? Then consider the harpoon pattern. The harpoon blade has been around tactical knife circles for a number of years now, the name being derived from the cutlery community’s necessity to give a blade pattern a name. Not to be confused with a real harpoon like those on whaling ships aand Eskimo spears for garnering seals, the harpoon blade is something else, perhaps much closer to a clip-point style in that there’s a break in the blade. The Liberator by Kevin Klein has a 9-inch damascus blade of 15N20 and 1084 carbon steels. The handle is African blackwood with a wrought iron spine and liners, and old-school-inspired filework. Overall length: 14 inches. The showcase aspect of Kevin’s fighter for this issue are the mokume bolsters. He made them using two different shibuichi alloys, 18k gold and copper. The front collar also is shibuichi. Kevin fashioned the accompanying sheath from cowhide leather, fish skin leather, copper, damascus, mokume and forged wrought iron. Depending on your location, the great outdoors offers a potpourri of knife opportunities. In areas where winter is slow to release its grip, winter camping, hiking and ice fishing are a few of the activities. Where winter is or soon will be giving way to spring, turkey hunting, fishing and boar hunting are outdoor favorites. The Mongrel is knifemaker Edmund Davidson’s first-ever double sub-hilt and was the idea of Edmund’s friend, Rosemary Huckaby of Fresno, California. “She said, ‘Edmund, when are you going to make a double sub-hilt?’” Davidson recalled. “At that very second I was inspired to make what I had never ever heard of or seen before. So the next day I spent all day drawing two double sub-hilt patterns.” The first of those was the Mongrel. Made in Edmund’s trademark integral construction, the Mongrel boasts CPM 154 stainless blade steel, a reverse “S” guard, double-scallop-type SOG bowie blade spine, and a snake-wood handle. As these words are written, sitting members of the BLADE Magazine Cutlery Hall Of Fame® are making their nominations for who will be inducted into the Cutlery Hall Of Fame during BLADE Show 2019 June 7-9 at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta. When you read these words those nominations will have been completed and the final balloting will be under way. The entire process rekindles fond memories for this writer, most of which involve the Hall Of Fame ceremony itself that annually occurs during the BLADE Magazine Awards Reception the Saturday night of the BLADE Show.
