Hogue Clarification In “Tradition or Convenience?” on page 62 of the October BLADE®, the author reviewed the Hogue Expel. The Expel is a key component of our new Hogue hunting line of knives and hunting accessories. However, the knife has a patent-pending integrated ejection system that wasn’t clearly communicated in the article. The article reported that the best way to change an Expel blade is with a pair of pliers, but that is incorrect. We would like to make it clear that the ejection system was designed for the end user to safely expel the surgical blade without fear of injury or the use of additional tools. Some patterns stand the test of time and become legendary for a reason, be it a story, movie or book. The Nessmuk-style knife stands out because of its shape. Nessmuk was the pen name of George Washington Sears, a 19th-century American writer, conservationist and outdoorsman. He wrote about his wilderness adventures, particularly his solo canoe trips in the Adirondacks, a picturesque mountain range in northeastern New York state. He promoted a simple and lightweight approach to camping and woodcraft. According to the story, the Nessmuk knife was named after a childhood friend of Sears’s from the American Indian community. When you think of processing game, a skinner is typically the first knife that comes to mind—and rightfully so. At the same time, game shears provide a viable role in the processing equation, particularly with small game like squirrels, rabbits, fowl and fish. A good pair of shears made for small game processing can cut through bone, slice hide, remove unwanted viscera and, in the case of fish, remove heads and fins. Many shears have extras thrown in, technically making them multi-tools, though that’s a bit of a stretch. “I have carried a Buck 425 pocketknife for many years. Its sides are worn smooth. I got it from the PX when I was stationed in Germany after I lost my Leatherman Tool on a parachute jump. The Buck was marked down due to the package being damaged. I got it for about $12. The Nessmuk-style knife has a unique shape that sets it apart from other models. The 4-to-5-inch blade has a hump on the spine that is closer to the point. The blade also has a deep belly and an upswept point, which makes it ideal for slicing, skinning and similar tasks. The distinct blade shape is the defining feature of a Nessmuk-style knife. George Washington Sears, aka Nessmuk, preferred thin knives with keen edges. He paired his knife with a double-bit hatchet and a folding knife, forming his “trinity” of cutting tools. A couple of decades ago, attention started turning to the category of bushcraft knives. As usual, custom knifemakers were the ones filling the demand and leading the way. I was proud to be among them, along with such makers as Scott Gossman and others. There were those* before us but the push back then seemed more on survival knives with a tactical leaning. After the push started, many smelled the opportunity to make money and the genre was flooded with assorted marketing schemes and people seeking their 15 minutes of fame. Benjamin Kamon calls his full-size art cleaver Schnitter, a medieval German name for the death. Translated into English, schnitter means cutter. He captures each translation quite well in his cleaver with an imposing blade and a handle carved in a Grim Reaper-type theme. The blade is forged 1.2519 tungsten-alloyed carbon steel, which shows some prominent alloy banding on its surface. The handle is moose ivory with engraved end caps of 925 silver. Philipp Mann of Dark Sigil Workshop did the engraving and carving, the latter which includes gold dust embedded in the hourglass.
