Penny for a Knife I love the old traditions such as the penny for a knife (“Tradition in Twilight?”, page 98, June issue). I am fortunate in that it is not unusual for me to be gifted a knife—so much so, in fact, that I keep a supply of antique coins, mostly old English, on hand to use in the exchange. Largest Aussie Show Cancelled Due in large part to mandated security measures that would increase costs far beyond the show’s ability to implement and pay for them, the 2025 Sydney Knife Show—Australia’s largest custom knife show—has been cancelled. The cancellation announcement was made May 2 for the show that had been scheduled for Aug. 23-24 at the Rosehill Racecourse Grand Pavilion in Sydney, Australia. At press time, no plans had been announced concerning a rescheduling of the event. In the May 2 statement released on behalf of the show on social media, the Australian Knife Art Association (KAA) Committee stated, “We’re incredibly disappointed to announce that the 2025 Sydney Knife Show has been cancelled. A self-described child of the ’60s, Larry Hirsch jumped at the chance to buy the DeFender when a collector offered it for sale. Made by Lloyd Hale a quarter century ago from the neck of a 1960s-era Fender Jazzmaster guitar, the knife did not have a sheath originally, so Hirsch got with Hale earlier this year and brainstormed one in the shape of the main body of the guitar, complete with strap and vol-ume and tone control knobs. “I told Lloyd the knobs had to turn because everyone that sees it, the first thing they will do is turn the knobs,” Hirsch said. We usually have three cover knives but this time decided to go with one—especially considering how unusual Lloyd Hale’s De-Fender is. Featuring a neck from a 1960s Fender Jazzmaster guitar and made by Hale for a collector a quarter century ago, the knife is a cutlery tribute to rock and roll. Adding to it all is the sheath. While made by Hale to resemble a guitar, it wasn’t completed till earlier this year. The DeFender’s new owner, collector Larry Hirsch, wanted a sheath and he and Hale collaborated on the design for it. The old saying goes that two things might “fit like a glove” or “go hand in glove.” But just maybe another question involves exactly when the “glove fits.” Since mankind began working with tools, stone, bronze, steel and even in conditions that might be less than ideal, such as clearing trees and brush, dressing an animal, building a structure, or handling heat and cold temperatures, the idea of protection has been second nature.
