A long launch Feadship's latest superyacht, Project 1010, is so big that it had to hit the water in stages, says Katia Damborsky Feadship’s 118-metre Project 1010 has made a splash at the yard’s Makkum facility in the Netherlands. The sheer size of the yacht meant the launch was completed in stages, and it took more than 12 hours to free her from the construction shed. The 4,999GT yacht marks a significant milestone for Feadship as its longest launch to date, superseding its current flagship, the 110-metre Anna, by eight metres. It has a distinctive midnight-blue hull defined by a long line of portholes and is crowned by a white superstructure, with an unusual pod-style upper deck encased in glass. As the world’s superyacht fleet ages, so refit activity increases - a trend that has also started to impact the boats that serve the mothership. Tenders, especially custom ones, are now being refitted in record numbers - and MARSS is a prime example. Previously known as Man-of-War and the main tender for 126-metre Octopus, this 18.8-metre Vikal, often photographed in the dry dock of its former mothership, is quasilegendary. Jura II’s name is a nod to McColl’s Scottish roots. A number of his yachts have been named after his favourite islands in Scotland, including a Symbol 57 called Skye and his first Jura, the Nordhavn 57. At the moment, the Scotsman hasn’t found anything to top the rugged Hebridean isle of Jura, which is famous for its whirlpools and single malt whiskies. McColl explains: “It’s sort of unimaginative, but when I was looking at the map for other islands of Scotland, I just couldn’t think of one that I liked better than Jura!”…

The 56-metre Galaxy was a successful and recently refitted charter yacht when she came up on the market. What attracted her new owners, Dave Hagewood and Danielle Hill, had a lot to do with what made her such a successful charter yacht: first, her welcoming crew, then her amenities, including a top deck gym and a splitlevel owner’s suite. Plus, her name fired up the imagination of these newcomers to yacht ownership. Hagewood has a keen interest in space as his father had worked at NASA and the name and timing seemed like fate. With new-build yachts taking several years to complete and in high demand, many people have turned to buying older boats with the aim of giving them a rapid upgrade over three to four months and getting them back on the water. ON BOARD All together now The dance of the refit requires managing a lot of tasks in a short time frame, and when multiple trades converge on a 25-metre sailing boat, it gets all the more interesting. “In the last couple of weeks on Atao you couldn’t see the deck for the people,” laughs Pendennis project manager Niels van Dinther, who oversaw a six-month refit of the 2006 JFA sailing yacht. Pendennis pulled it off though. Following a change in ownership, Atao had come in for a new teak deck; hull and mast paint; engine, generator and hydraulics overhaul; deckhouse varnish; and rig service. I started sailing on a P Class when I was 12. In 1977, I bought a 13.7-metre Sparkman & Stephens called Inca, a successful ocean racer. When I started with new boats, I could not get a shipyard to build what I wanted, sol put together my own team and in 1982 I built Chanel. She was 28 metres, which was pretty big. When it comes to retail, Gary Friedman knows a thing or two particularly with regards to selling upmarket homewares to the US market. Dropping out of college aged 18, the charismatic San Franciscan began his 47-year career as a stock boy at Gap. "We try to make their stay here as pleasant as we can for them," says Mike Carr from Pendennis. "We'll take them on all sorts of activities ranging from go-karts or horse riding to cricket or football. They're just little social things that help build team spirit." Going beyond sales at superyacht shows In the past, yacht shows had a singular agenda: selling yachts. Now, however, they are evolving and shifting to an increased focus on networking, marketing, eco-initiatives and securing the right balance of buyers and boats. At the Monaco Yacht Show, those changes include the unveiling of a sustainable area and a zone dedicated to adventureenhancing toys and gadgets. ON BOARD WITH OWNERS’ CLUB “To be honest, I think that 99 per cent of modern boats are ugly,” says Cameron McColl, from on board his classic motor yacht Jura II. This is perhaps not a surprising statement from the BVIs-based businessman, who has just finished restoring a classic Aston Martin DB9 convertible and collects historic scientific instruments in his spare time.
