In 2010 the area around the fishing village of Chelem and its lagoon was designated a protected area within the Yucatan Nature Reserve. Since then, a collective of 18 local women, who call themselves Las Chelemeras after their village, have been restoring the mangrove forest. Mangroves protect coastal erosion and prevent sediment from damaging nearby coral reefs and seagrass meadows. We were about n when my brother rebuilt a $100 Laser, and I built my own kayak. As we got older, we tinkered with bigger boats. We both ended up in New York for graduate school. Fishtek Marine's novel new technique called “scallop potting” caught the eye of the judges this year. “Rarely do eureka moments come along in fisheries,” says Rob Enever, head of science and uptake at Fishtek Marine, a conservation engineering company that develops devices that minimise incidental capture or bycatch of threatened species by commercial fisheries. This year Fishtek discovered a global first described by Enever as “a new low-impact fishing method for scallops”, which lures them into crab and lobster pots by LED lights. Four years ago, aged 25, Madison Stewart came to Lombok from her native Australia, while working on a documentary film “to expose the shark trade and the men at its heart”. Cover boat ATHOS Sometimes, you simply know. “I just absolutely fell in love with her,” the new owner of Athos says, recalling his first charter of the 62-metre schooner in Greece.
