All or nothing It's taken two major refit operations to turn the 1974-built Dutch pilot vessel Omnia into a true superyacht, says Katia Damborsky The 60.8-metre Omnia recently revealed her new look following a change of ownership and a 14-month rebuild in Turkey at Atlas Shipyard. Her new owner wanted to soften her commercial look even further after her initial 1999 conversion, with massive interior and exterior modifications by H2 Yacht Design and Greek design studio Karageorgiou to the tune of $14,000,000 (£11.401). Lastyear I was invited to a windswept airfield in Oxfordshire to see and drive a car that, as a long-standing Porsche 911 owner, I was prepared to dislike – a classic 1980s model by Everrati that had been adapted to run on battery power. But during the event I couldn't help falling in love with Everrati's electric Porsche, both for the elegant way the conversion had been resolved and for the overall fit and finish. On rare occasions, a refit is more akin to a new build. Such is the case with H3. She has been stripped back to the bare hull and rebuilt by Oceanco, which originally delivered the boat in 2000. Reymond Langton removed the wings, the sloping glass and the bow mast; now there are contemporary overhangs, vertical floor-to-ceiling glass and flowing curves. The yacht has been lengthened by 11 metres to enlarge the aft deck and introduce a beach club area and a seven-metre infinity pool with a lifting mosaic floor. Stubbornly high inflation and interest rates, an ongoing war in Ukraine with little sign of an end, growing concerns over China's economic health and sluggish performance from leading European markets – it has been another difficult year for the global economy. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecasts that growth dropped from 3.5 per cent in 2022 to three per cent in 2023, with inflation only moderating from 6.9 per cent to 5.8 per cent. Reportedly built for a senior Emirati royal, Opera certainly has some of the hallmarks of a Middle Eastern boat. Her size and gross tonnage catapult her directly into the ranks of the world's io biggest private yachts, while deep overhangs between decks and lots of enclosed deck space hint at use in an aggressive climate. Much anticipated with its bold angular design from Espen Øino, Norn is the new boat for the former owners of Skat, the 70-metre Lürssen built in 2002. Øino has drawn inspiration from Skat‘s iconic military grey exterior, creating an even larger winter garden on the upper deck. Espen Øino is responsible for this giant yacht's crisp exterior lines.
