My favourite kind of bar on a boat is one I can access myself. I recall being on the 36-metre Moonen yacht Brigadoon a few years ago in Palma and asking the owners why they had opted to face the fridges in the flybridge bar at the guest seating, and the response was something along the lines of: “Our guests are quite capable of getting their own drinks.” I loved that. From earthy, smoky mescal to versatile corn tortillas, Mexico is famed for countless delicious, digestible triumphs - but as many a superyacht owner who has arrived on Central American shores knows, wine, unfortunately, isn't one of them. That was until recently, anyway, because the country's long overlooked and often misunderstood winemaking culture is finally having its moment. Boasting a rich and storied history peppered with innovation, trauma and controversy, it all began in the 1520s when, following the Spanish invasion, conquistadors and missionaries brought the European wine grape, vitis vinifera, to northern Mexico. It doesn't take a bigyacht to make a very big impression. For the 30.9-metre Minella, the first 30XP from Turkish yard Numarine, that “wow” moment strikes as early as the main saloon. Sun-warmed teak is switched out for smooth, cool stone underfoot as you enter a room more Manhattan loft than yacht interior.
