VENICE The striped wooden posts that stand like sentinels at the thresholds of Venice's waterside palazzos are the picture-postcard icons of La Serenissima. They are certainly decorative with their twisting candy-cane design, but these Pali di Casada carry a deeper meaning, having served as markers of power, trade and identity for centuries. Each Pali di Casada - meaning Poles of the Family - begins its life far front the city. Traditionally, larch trunks were felled in the Dolomites and sent downriver, chosen for their hardiness in brackish water. Once in Venice, carpenters would shape them by hand and plant them in the silt to create mooring points for boats and gondolas (this is the same journey followed by the timber used to build the gondolas themselves). The recent publication of the Assouline tome Terence Disdale: My Art of Yacht Design was accompanied by a documentary film capturing the essence of Disdale's philosophy and artistic journey (produced by BOAT International Media's agency B.creative Studio). Last month's release of the 2026 Global Order Book saw an impressive cohort of explorer yachts in the works. At the beginning of this year, the number of expedition-oriented vessels stood at 101 - a small dip, but still the second-highest result on record after last year's 105 - according to BOATPro. If the industry continues its current trajectory, there could be as many as 315 explorer yachts delivered within a single decade by 2030. To quantify just how quickly this sector is growing, this would represent an increase of more than 80 per cent over the previous 10-year period, which is already the highest-performing decade in history. Every step brings a larger and more prestigious transom into view, many bearing celebrated names, but they pale in spectacle next to the blue hull of the 119-metre Feadship that I am here to see. The smooth-grain finish of natural teak stretches to the very edges of this pocket-sized boat.
