AUCKLAND-BASED SOUTHERN SPARS will be the official supplier of the full rig package for the One Design Volvo Ocean 65 fleet for a second consecutive race, a move that strengthens the company’s historic ties with sailing’s toughest team challenge. It will again supply the high-modulus masts and racing box boom, as well as a full EC6 bundled carbon fibre rod rigging package with deflected backstays for the fleet. The Ocean 65 masts measure 30.30m – about the same height as a 10-storey building. The mast is one of the most dynamic and complex components on a Volvo Ocean 65 as it transfers all of the power generated by the wind and sails to the boat. The stars governing Barrie Neilson’s career looked decidedly lacklustre in the late 1960s. By his own admission he was never any good at school (couldn’t concentrate and if they’d had ‘-isms’ in those days, he’d have had one). So he escaped to a job as soon as was legal. The grim carnage at the freezing works was alleviated only by his passion for racing motorbikes. Other than a few fallen ruins, Chagos is untouched by human development and offers a sanctuary like no other on earth for the myriad of creatures which inhabit her shores. I’ve just seen my first – and probably my only – sight of the long-forgotten world I’ve dreamed of experiencing, and it is truly a blessed parallel universe. A SURVEY OF THE PUBLIC’S PERCEPTIONS of New Zealand’s environment shows that we have an overly positive view of our environment, but that we are becoming increasingly concerned about the impact of our primary industries on nature. Respondents felt the most important environmental issues facing the country were water, followed by agricultural issues and climate change. “New Zealanders love their rivers and lakes, coastlines and oceans,” says Forest & Bird spokesperson Geoff Keey. “We are becoming more aware of the pressures placed on these resources by our primary industries.” 59 percent of respondents identified farming as a major cause of damage to the environment (up from 25 percent when the survey began in 2000). 65 percent of respondents thought management of farming effluent and runoff was bad or very bad.…

KENNEDY POINT BOATHARBOUR Ltd has released the details of revisions to its marina project at Kennedy Point. The revision comes after months of analysis to prove the feasibility of using floating attenuators in lieu of rock breakwaters to protect the marina basin. The company flew experts to New Zealand from Swedish company SF Marinas, world leaders in floating attenuators, to examine the location and prepare a design. Company director, Tony Mair, says the advantages of using floating attenuators are considerable, including minor impact on the seabed compared with a rock breakwater and a much quicker and easier installation. BRITISH SAILORS STEVE GOACHER and Tim Harper only finished 21st in the last race of the recently-completed 21st Lexus Flying Fifteen World Championship in Napier, but it proved enough to hand them their fourth world title. And ultimately, their win was decided in the protest room. The title was closely contested by the Australian sailors Nick and Janet Jerwood, who crossed the line in fourth place. But after a lengthy hearing the Jerwoods were disqualified from the final race, handing the title to the British team. New vessel for Abel Tasman tours WILSONS ABEL TASMAN has added Vista 2 to its fleet of tourism boats. Formally a cray fishing boat based in Perth, Vista 2, arrived at the Allspec Marine and Composite’s shed in Nelson for modification to passenger ferry. Structural drawings were completed by Gurit in Auckland. Work consisted of a new rear cabin area, wheelhouse, passarelle platform, reinforced transom, new windows and painting. The Environment Canterbury Navigation Safety Bylaw sets up a system for boaties to apply for a mooring place, once one becomes available. Due to the demand for mooring space, it is a first-in-first-served policy. As the holder of a mooring authorisation, a boatie can opt to place a brand new mooring, or buy an existing mooring from someone. JUST OVER A CENTURY on from the advent of the Universal Rule, to which they were originally built, the J Class will this year stage its first-ever World Championship. The J Class Association recently became an affiliate member of the International Maxi Association (IMA). IMA administers the International Maxi Class, recognised by the sport’s governing body, World Sailing. This status permits the IMA to stage annual World Championships for maxi boats, notably the Maxi 72 World Championship, held every September in Porto Cervo, Sardinia. US RESEARCHERS ARE warning that climate change could ignite conflicts between countries competing for the same fish stocks – and preventing these will demand better global co-operation for managing the resource. Speaking at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Boston recently, the researchers outlined the potential threats arising from depleted and/or shifting fish populations. Christopher Costello, professor of environmental resource economics at the University of California, has developed a global-scale model of projected changes in the world’s major fish stocks due to the effects of climate change. These changes stem from two main issues: changes in productivity and changes in range, or species’ distribution in the world’s oceans. His analysis suggests that more than half of the world’s fisheries are likely to shrink…

“All D-Tube boats can be customised to some exten” The Sealegs 7.7m Sport D-Tube is the first boat in an expanded range of D-Tube models. Larger versions are in the pipeline. Sealegs International already produces a 6.1m D-Tube model, an all-aluminium vessel that’s proven popular with fishers and others who appreciate its rugged durability. It happened the day before a major regatta after two weeks of family cruising in the Marlborough Sounds. Flying Machine’s new holding tank, recently installed and fully compliant with Young 88 Class rules, had performed well despite a few ‘capacity’ issues. The rule-of-thumb regarding the size of a holding tank should be calculated as follows: the size you think you need x waterline length x number of teenagers aboard. Invariably this will equal the size your partner first suggested but you didn’t listen because you were trying to save weight/money. Still, despite the frequent need for emptying (yes, 15 litres is too small) all was going reasonably well. Although the 43 is the smallest in the Magellano range, at 17,400kg fully loaded she’s hardly a lightweight. The chunky, masculine styling gives a substantial, ship-like presence on the water, though the open flybridge keeps things reasonably balanced proportionally. The semi-displacement hull was designed by UK-based Bill Dixon Design and is very different to the typical warped-V planing hull. A plumb bow provides a fairly fine entry at the waterline with a deepish, U-shaped chest below flattening off in the aft sections to prevent squatting at speed. Deep spray rails are an obvious feature, sitting well above the waterline at the bow and, entering the water about three metres aft, they continue to the transom underwater. After two and a half weeks in Wellington we were ready to swing at anchor again and departed for Marlborough Sounds with our son Daniel and his fiancé Bayley on board. The Cook Strait lived up to its reputation as a wild and scary place. We started with a nice downwind sail at dawn past Worser Bay where our son Daniel won the OP Nationals all those years ago. We had cousin William on his boat right next to us, and the race was on. William was ribbing us about our beanies and puffer jackets so I couldn’t help giving him something back on his reefed mainsail and little jib as we sailed away.
