Kennedy Point Boatharbour Ltd has been given the go-ahead to build a new 186-berth floating marina at Kennedy Point in Putiki Bay, Waiheke Island. An independent panel of five commissioners delegated by Auckland Council granted the project resource consent in May after a weeklong hearing in April. The Marina will be located west of the existing SeaLink car ferry terminal at Kennedy Point and will be accessible from Donald Bruce Road to the south of the breakwater. It will have 186 berths, up to 19 pile moorings and 30 public day berths. Self-confessed ‘fishing addicts’ Mohammed and Shazia Irfaaz are the winners of the $150,000 Surtees/ Yamaha Grand Prize Package presented at May’s Hutchwilco Boat Show. The prize, the largest and most valuable prize ever given away at a boat show in Australasia, was drawn under Police supervision in front of the event’s exhibitors. Mohammed and Shazia received their life-changing call shortly after the show closed and were understandably jubilant. Y ou wouldn’t know it from a casual appraisal, but Cation is entirely carbon fibre. She weighs around 12 tonnes lightship and though she’s billed as a performance-cruiser the visual clues suggest the scale’s tipped to performance. O ther than its hull material, the Herley Commander shares very little with other aluminium trailer boats. Its looks are like no other Kiwi-built 7m trailer boat, which has the potential to polarise potential customers, but its unusual design translates into a smooth, unruffled ride, lots of internal volume and surefooted handling. The culmination of a fruitful collaboration between Nick Herd, a timber and composites boatbuilder, and ex-Navy commercial boat operator Sean Kelly, the Herley Commander is a large-volume, planing trailer boat with a long waterline. Russia is developing a massive survey submarine for scientific research in the Arctic Circle in the hope of finding previously untapped natural resources. Fuelled by a nuclear reactor the vessel will be the largest civilian submersible ever constructed. It’s from the drawing board of the Rubin Design Bureau, responsible for the Soviet Union’s 1980s Typhoon-class missile submarines. Designed to conduct surveys using very low frequency active sonar for penetrating the sea floor, the sub will have two sets of wing-like sonar receivers that retract into its hull. Russia is hoping to find mineral and energy resources in areas of the Arctic that are being uncovered by global warming and melting ice. Four more ships will be built at STX France between 2022-2026 The newest member of Royal Caribbean International’s Oasis class of ships, Symphony of the Seas, has been floated out at the shipyard and is now one step closer to completion as her April 2018 debut approaches. At 362m the 230,000-ton behemoth will inherit the title of world’s largest cruise ship. She is under construction at STX France in St. Nazaire, France. With the exterior now done, interior work will continue until the April 2018 handover. She is the fourth Oasis-class vessel, and heavier than her sister – Harmony of the Seas – which comes in at 226,963 tons. The sisters are nevertheless the same length. I t’s 9am on a rainy Thursday, down the bottom end of Waiheke Island. A turbulent ferry trip and a heartstopping taxi ride have brought me to the Orapiu wharf, from where I can see my home for the next two days, her bright red hull bobbing gently in the grey waters. S ituated in the tropical northern hemisphere 2,500 nautical miles from New Zealand, the Marshall Islands comprise more than 1,220 islands grouped into 29 coral atolls, plus five single ocean islands. The total land area is only 180km2, yet the overall footprint is nearly two million square kilometres. Before I sailed there, the only thing I knew about these islands was that one of them was called Bikini and that in peacetime the Americans had nuked the hell out of it, making it unfit for human habitation. L ionel – despite his 85 years – is a remarkably active, agile, bright-eyed gent who looks like he might have stepped straight from the pages of a Dickens novel. He’s something of a traditionalist – doesn’t have a mobile phone or a computer – and his craftsmanship is legendary among the marine fraternity. Always busy, he’s often referred to as the ‘chap who built 57 vessels in as many years’. These range from small dinghies to displacement yachts and launches, and include restorations of historic steamboats, as well as bluewater cruisers that have taken him all over the South Pacific. What these vessels have in common – other than their builder – is their wooden construction. And he’s built every one of them single-handedly. He’s always preferred working alone.…

Some 17 years after she was salvaged from a South Carolina harbour, the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley – sunk in 1864 – has finally revealed how she was propelled. The sub secured its place in history by becoming the first submersible to sink an enemy warship, when it attacked the Union’s 1124-ton screw sloop USS Housatonic. This vessel had been on blockade-duty in Charleston’s outer harbour. Sadly, the Hunley’s glory was short-lived: she was too close to her deadly torpedo when it detonated – and she quickly followed her victim to a watery grave. All eight crew members died. A marine chart is no mere piece of paper. On one level it may be a map of a designated stretch of coastline – or ocean – showing depth contours and sea floor features. Properly used, it can save your life – or prevent drastic damage to your boat or crew. But on a more fanciful level, a chart also does great service spread over a kitchen table to plan next summer’s cruising itinerary while winter gales thrash around outdoors. A chart – calling it a map will earn withering scorn from navigation tutors and experienced seafarers – is the culmination of painstaking survey work and a long tradition of navigational excellence. W e were still 400 miles away from the Marquesas Islands on our Pacific crossing when I woke to the beating sound of heavy rain. Exploring the company’s project resumé is a bit like wandering through a high-tech Victorian emporium – you never know what you’ll find.
