After nearly four years in recess the New Zealand Traditional Boatbuilding school has re-opened its doors at new premises on the Te Atatu peninsula. The school was founded in 2005 by trustees Robert Brooke, Harold Kidd, Bruce Tantrum and Ron Jamieson and successfully ran wooden boatbuilding courses at Hobsonville for seven years before being forced to make way for a new housing development. During that time hundreds of students attended classes on everything from traditional boatbuilding to apprenticeship training and small boatbuilding. This saw students build small boats to take home, often involving a son or daughter in the process. Safety systems specialist Survitec has moved into new, purposebuilt facilities in Mount Wellington, after nearly a quarter of century at its premises in Hargreaves Street. The company supplies and services life-support and safety systems for the marine, aviation and defence industries. This includes inflatable lifejackets, life-rafts and mass evacuation systems, as well as tactical defence products, helicopter emergency egress systems and pilot protection ensembles. National sales manager Dave Chapman says the new site has facilities for high-pressure cylinder testing and filling, defence force lifejacket and davit launch life-raft testing – as well as warehousing for increased stock inventory and handling. Environment The volume of plastic pollution that’s now a feature of our oceans has become a growing global problem and evidence shows that, without doubt, plastic is now in the food chain. Microbeads used in shower gels and many other household products have a lot to answer for. Designed specifically small enough so they are flushed easily through water-treatment plants, they are creating oceans of plastic smog. Many countries have either banned the use of microbeads in personal care products, or are in the process of doing so, including New Zealand, where this ban should be in place by July next year. Lithium-ion Batteries The owners of the 1970s MK1 Salthouse Corsair Marinus have, over the past five years of ownership, tackled significant upgrades of this popular design. Like many of the Corsairs of the time, Marinus was originally fitted with a single 210hp Caterpillar engine. Cruise speed at 2,200rpm was 11 knots with a maximum of around 15 knots depending on the load. While the Corsair has an enviable reputation for punching into seas for’ard of the beam, handling can also be tricky going downwind. Various modifications to the design have been tried over the years – including reducing the keel area – with varying degrees of success. Whittley CR 2600 Released in Australia late last year, this boat is the first CR 2600 sold in New Zealand, supplied to a Blenheim couple by Whittley dealer Bensemann Marine in Auckland. Bensemann is awaiting the arrival of a second, pre-sold CR 2600, with more on order. A trailerable family cruiser, the CR 2600 is generouslyequipped and surprisingly spacious inside, thanks to its tall, curvaceous forward cabin. This is a hardtop model with toughened glass windscreens, sliding side windows and drop-covers that completely enclose the cockpit for cosy overnighting. Only the black canvas and clear-plastic side covers were fitted for our run in the boat. Gas safety There are endless examples of how not to do it – califonts installed directly above a gas cook top in the galley, garden-hose used as a gas line, gas bottles stored against an exhaust manifold in the engine room – and on it goes. They all underscore the importance of the Marine Gas Regulations introduced in 2013. Gas fitting is about installing gas pipes, appliances and flues. The legal definition and scope of this work is found in the Plumbers, Gas fitters and Drainlayers Act of 2006. The definition is comprehensive and makes it illegal for any person to undertake this work unless properly qualified. The rationale may seem obvious – fire and/or explosions. America’s Cup-winning helmsman Peter Burling has joined Team Brunel for the 2017-18 edition of the Volvo Ocean Race – and he’s already out sailing with his new teammates in pre-race qualifying. The signing is a major coup for Brunel skipper Bouwe Bekking, and sets up what should be a compelling rivalry with Burling’s long-term sailing partner Blair Tuke, who is competing with Spanish team MAPFRE. Together, Burling and Tuke carried the flag for New Zealand at the 2016 Olympics and came home from Rio with a gold medal in the 49er class. UNHAPPY NORTHLAND BOATIES Dear Editor Northland Regional Council (NRC) recently sent its invoices for the annual charges to all mooring owners in Northland. Most rubbed their eyes when they read about a new “Marine Biosecurity Charge” they are requested to pay in future, on top of their previous fees. What’s it all about? Well, on 27 June 2017 the NRC adopted a Marine Pathway Management Plan (the second region in the country to do so, after Fiordland). Some 65 percent of the plan is to be funded by this biosecurity charge – levied on owners of moorings, boatsheds and marina berths. NRC believes this fee will target vessel owners who, it claims, are mainly responsible for the spreading of marine pests already established elsewhere in the country, e.g. in Auckland…

Jeanneau 51 A year ago I reviewed Jeanneau’s new 54 – a stately performance cruiser – and was sufficiently impressed to propose that she was perhaps the French manufacturer’s best model yet. With this year’s brand new 51, I now find myself having to move the dear old 54 to one side. We can still be friends. Banks Peninsula As you sail down the east coast of the South Island, it’s easy to understand why on February 17, 1770 Captain Cook mistook Banks Peninsula for an island. The ancient, extinct volcanic peaks appear to float on the hazy, flat horizon. Cook described the land as “of a circular figure ... of a very broken uneven surface and having more the appearance of barrenness than fertility.” He named it Banks Island after the Endeavour’s botanist, Joseph Banks. Cook didn’t stop to explore the extensive sheltered harbours and bays of what we now call Banks Peninsula, instead steering away and continuing South. Greenline Hybrid Slovenian boatbuilder Greenline has taken up the challenge, producing a range of hybrid launches. And going one step further than hybrid cars, where the battery’s charged by the fuel-burning engine, these boats also collect and store energy from the sun. Greenline currently produces four hybrid models – a 33, 39, 40 and 48 – with a new 44 coming off the production line next year. All combine a new-generation Volvo diesel with a generator/electric motor unit, sitting within a ‘superdisplacement’ low-drag hull design for efficient motoring. They use traditional diesel power for passage-making, and switch to the electric motor for slow cruising, manoeuvring and docking. New Zealand Lagoon dealer Orakei Marine received the “Best Customer Service, Overseas” award for 2017 at the recent Lagoon dealer meeting in Bordeaux, France. The accolade was totally unexpected, says Orakei Marine MD Jason Snashall, who credits his staff, specifically Tom Van Praagh, boatbuilders Blair Clarke and Jordan Pretty and apprentices Dan Purchase and Sam Springett, with the win. The award stems from work undertaken by the team on a 52-foot Lagoon delivered new to its German owners in Bordeaux. It then sailed to New Zealand via the Caribbean and Pacific (Boating NZ, June 2017). The owners encountered a few warranty-related issues on the way and became increasingly frustrated with shipping delays and the difficulty of finding technicians to work on the boat. Seamac Aluminium Managing director Shamus MacInnes says the sliding windows are for Riviera’s newest models – the 395 SUV and 39 Open Fly Bridge – scheduled for launching next year. Riviera’s vessels use fairly large sliding windows – up to five metres in length. The builders liked the custom extrusion and sliding concept SeaMac designed for the new models, in particular the sliding windows’ freeflowing movement. The expansion comes hot on the heels of a significant change at SeaMac. If you use LPG gas on your vessel be aware that many insurers are now requiring that the gas installation is certified. To meet the requirements, Auckland’s Westhaven Marina recommends that you: • Fit gas detectors into your bilge area with two sensors, one in the vicinity of your gas appliances and one at the lowest point where gas is likely to accumulate (usually in the bilge) • Insist that any gas work is done by a qualified installer • Get the work certified and provide your insurance company with the details. Boats not only require a gas certificate but also require the work to be lodged on the Energy Safety website’s high-risk database, which a qualified gas fitter will take care of for you. Auckland’s Friends of Regional Parks (FOR Parks), has welcomed Auckland Council’s decision to designate Browns Island Motukorea as its newest Regional Park and its first island park. Says FOR Parks president Bronwen Turner: “We applaud the energy and persistence of Auckland Council to guarantee public access and enjoyment of this remarkable asset into the future.” The park opens up a myriad of recreational opportunities for nature and heritage lovers, the boating fraternity, day walkers and campers. One of the country’s smallest yacht clubs – Manly Sailing Club – has welcomed Russell Coutts as its new Commodore. Coutts addressed the club’s recent AGM and outlined potential areas of focus and development for the year ahead. He wants the club to encourage more sailors and families to become involved and to also embrace other watersports. Junior sailing is already underway, and there are plans to expand this programme by developing closer relationships with local schools. The club also plans to offer adult Learn-to-Sail courses and create a more regular calendar of racing and fun events involving in a wider range of classes. The America’s Cup made a brief appearance at an Onehunga CNC machining and composite engineering facility last week, accompanied by members of Emirates Team New Zealand who’d come to extend a big thank-you. Jackson Industries produced the precision carbon-fibre foils for ETNZ’s high-flying catamaran which defeated Oracle Team USA 7 – 1 in Bermuda to bring the Auld Mug back to New Zealand. “We particularly wanted to bring the Cup to the team at Jackson Industries,” said ETNZ Shore Manager Sean Regan, “as a gesture of appreciation for an incredible job, executed perfectly, against an impossible deadline.” As one of the most crucial components on the catamaran, he added, manufacturing the foils demanded high-spec moulds and tooling, high-tech composite engineering – and finally, precision machining of the foils. “All of…

Hanse Yachts has announced the release of four new yachts: the Hanse 348, 388, 418 and 548. The company says the vessels are faster, more convenient, more luxurious and even easier to use. The 10.4m Hanse 348 is the smallest in the new fleet, but boasts the same luxury and value as its three bigger cousins. The 11.4m 388 features six hull windows and a sail area of 67m2. The 12.41m 418 features a high rig and interesting use of glass panels, while the luxurious 16.22m Hanse 548 is equipped with a tender garage, a T-top and a high-class interior. Not only will a solar solution ensure the engine always kicks into life, it can even save you money in the long run: a battery’s life is considerably shortened if left in a discharged state. Two elements are required for a solar charging solution: the solar panels and a controller/regulator. Output from a solar panel varies widely depending on the amount of sun falling on it, while a battery needs to be charged at a very specific voltage. Whether the New Zealand public’s fishing rights are less well-defined than the rights of the commercial fishing industry is, I think, debatable. Legasea would certainly argue that non-commercial (public) fishing rights for shared fisheries are very well-defined under the Fisheries Act, which states non-commercial fishers shall “be allowed for” before the commercial catch is allowed by the Minister. In a shared fishery, it is entirely possible under the Fisheries Act that an MPI minister could legally allocate the allowable catch to firstly, Maori customary, and then ‘Other Mortality’, with the balance going to recreational fishers. The outcome of the Kahawai Legal Challenge, mounted a few years ago by a coalition of recreational fishing groups, showed that this was possible. Boat Haulage Ltd Boat Haulage was launched in 1974 and after some 42 years at the helm, Bob Wiley has sold at the company to Peter Waters. Peter had been a partial shareholder since 2000, and now owns the company with business partner Luke Pirie. The company specialises in transporting boats between 7m and 35m LOA – mainly around the North Island but also to the South Island – with a maximum weight of 35 tonnes.
