Steve Hyde has been a sailor all his life, cruising on his father’s Farr 38, White Lightning. Prestige Luxury Motor Yachts, part of the Jeanneau family, has announced six new models between 46 and 68 feet (14-20.3m). The Prestige 460 is a new flybridge model with a fullbeam master cabin while the 460 S is part of Prestige’s open Coupe model range. The Prestige 520 builds on the strengths of the popular 500 model, but adds length and a raft of new features. The sporty and chic 520 S Coupe shares the same hull but is a stylish sedan launch. Crowds enjoyed a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the high-quality production processes at New Zealand’s most successful luxury GRP pleasure boat manufacturer, Rayglass Boats, at an Open Weekend and Factory Tour in September. AFLIR (Forward Looking Infrared) camera is particularly useful when navigating around a dark bay filled with moored craft. The units began appearing on New Zealand recreational boats around 2006, but the technology dates to 1978 and was first geared to aviation systems. Today FLIR is the world’s largest producer of thermal cameras and is listed on the NASDAQ exchange with a market capital of over $5 billion. HOW FLIR WORKS FLIR cameras detect only infrared energy (not light) and, as a result, the lens of the unit uses a pricey rare metal called germanium because of its infrared conducting ability. Duthie Lidgard is a hard man to pin down. It takes quite a long time – months, rather than weeks – to secure an interview time, as he is frequently out of the country or at the very least rushing around organising things. But once we are finally sitting down with a coffee he is immensely personable and has plenty of time to talk. The threat of rising sea levels is being graphically represented in a series of ‘disappearing’ portraits painted by Hawaiian surfer-turned-artist Sean Yoro, who uses tidal movements to reinforce his message. Typically painted on sea walls and similar structures in various parts of the world, the portraits are only entirely visible twice a day – at low tide. The objective, says Yoro, is to “ignite a sense of urgency towards climate change in those who stumble upon these murals.” His portraits usually take anything from a day to three or four days to complete, depending on size and detail. He uses traditional oil paint, even though it doesn’t last as long as acrylic paint. But he prefers oil because its transience underscores the point about climate change: “life is precarious.” The…

World Sailing’s Sustainability Commission has taken the step to creating a ‘Sustainability Agenda 2030’ following its first meeting in London in August. Chaired by Mike Golding OBE, the group was appointed to the commission in June 2017. The August meeting brought the group together for the first time to discuss issues relating to sustainability within sailing Discussions and presentations were received on the circular economy, ocean plastics, boat and equipment construction, event logistics, embodied carbon, vessel strikes of marine fauna, accessibility, gender equality and supply chains. The commission, made up of members with scientific, sporting and sailing backgrounds, discussed where World Sailing, the world governing body of the sport, can make change and influence the industry. Rakino – a 28-foot Woollacott ketch – had endured countless Wellington gales on her Evans Bay mooring, when the weather gods decreed that her time was up. It was a particularly ferocious April northerly which drove her ashore last year, smashing not just the four planks and two frames at the turn of her starboard bilge, but also a longnurtured dream of sailing back into tropical waters for her owner Jim Horgan. Soon after he set the staysail somewhere in the Southern Ocean between New Zealand and Chile, solo sailor Vito Dumas turned to find a woman’s slipper floating on the sea. It was pink silk, with a pompom in a darker shade, and the only evidence he had seen of humanity in 2,500 nautical miles. The Seawise Giant seemed destined for an unhappy life from the moment she was launched in 1979 by Sumitomo Heavy Industries. The Greek company that ordered her reneged on the deal, and that set the tone. She endured numerous ownership and name changes over her 30 years’ service. But the ultimate indignity came when she was sunk by Saddam Hussain’s missiles during the Iran-Iraq war of 1988. The marine ecosystem is home to 142 species found nowhere else Chile’s Easter Island is famous for its Moai ‘head’ statues, but is bound to become even more renowned following the recent establishment of one of the world’s largest marine protection areas (MPA) off its coast. The new 740,000km2 Rapa Nui MPA is 4,000km from the Chile mainland, and is about the same size as the country itself. The area’s unique marine ecosystem is home to 142 species found nowhere else, 27 of which are threatened or endangered. It is also a spawning and breeding ground for many ocean predators, including tuna, marlin, swordfish and sharks. Plans are underway for the building of a new 30m tall ship catering to training programmes for Northland youth. The SV Kahu is the brainchild of a group of sailing enthusiasts, and has been designed by Whangarei-based naval architect, Erwin Haag. Haag, who built a similar vessel 40 years ago, says the project will be run by the newly-formed Kahu Trust. “We are passionate locals who want to make a difference to the children of Northland, offering a facility that promotes learning through the wind and sea by embracing the values of kaitiakitanga and guardianship.” He believes there is a need to teach today’s children how to engage in the real world without the aid of computers and multimedia, and give them skills such as teamwork, balance, coordination and accountability.…

With wings, twin props and a fuselage, the Airfish 8 looks more plane than boat, but in the mind of its inventor, it’s definitely a water-based craft that happens to fly – albeit only a few metres above the surface. The vessel flies using a phenomenon known as ‘ground effect’ – which allows the Airfish 8 to ‘skim’ over the water like a bird, floating on a cushion of air. This Wing-in-Ground Effect (WIG) principle has featured prominently in the development of human flight. As New Zealand’s oldest manufacturer of ‘rubber ducks’ – and with more than 40 years of experience building Hypalon inflatable boats – Lancer had the experience and expertise to design and build to YNZ’s exacting requirements. The project was in incubation for around 18 months, with initial discussions, concepts and design requirements started over two years ago. The boats would be in constant use, and needed to be capable of beach launching. This implied they needed to be tough enough to handle surf conditions and able to be run up on a shingle beach or left on a concrete boat ramp while the trailer is fetched. Sealegs International has begun supplying componentry for the first of three amphibious craft being built for an Australian ecotourism operator. Pennicott Wilderness Journeys (PWJ) has commissioned the RIBs, designed by Naiad Design NZ, built by Kirby Marine in Australia and amphibiously enabled by Sealegs. The craft will feature Sealegs Amphibious Enablement System (AES) 100, which can support a payload of thirty passengers along with two crew. PWJ opted for the amphibious solution for the sensitive National Park location, where construction of coastline infrastructure – such as a wharf – is not possible.
