The controversial sale of council-owned marina land in Auckland for housing has been put on hold after a public backlash. Six of Auckland’s 12 marinas are privately owned with the remainder owned by council and operated by Panuku. The latest flybridge model from International Marine in Melbourne, Australia maintains company’s tradition of building honest blue-water vessels that take sport-fishing seriously. The latest model might be bigger, but the family resemblance to its smaller siblings is unmistakable. The new C49 is Caribbean’s flagship model, a successor to the C47, adds a metre to the cockpit and a totally restyled flybridge hard top. Including bowsprit and stern platform, the C49 is almost 55 feet long. The extra waterline length results in a better shaft angle, for better fuel efficiency and a drier ride. This story begins in 1929 when 18-year-old Norm Bulloch arrived in New Zealand with his emigrating Scottish parents. After completing a gun-smithing apprenticeship with King and Henry in Masterton, Bulloch re-trained as a toolmaker before founding his own engineering business. While Bulloch loved boats, with business, house and family commitments, it wasn’t until 1955 that he was able to buy one – a 6.7m runabout powered by a 20hp Evinrude outboard. Bulloch wanted twin engines for reliability, so he fitted a second Evinrude, one of the first twin outboard rigs in Wellington. The Bulloch family used the runabout regularly in Wellington Harbour as well as Lake Taupo, where they eventually bought a bach. Even in New Zealand, which is known for its well-built custom boats, most of the new boat market is now made up of imported production boats. Young sailors Blake McGlashan and Seb Menzies won first place at the 2018 420 World Championships in August. The boys found their way to the podium in Newport, Rhode Island, USA by winning five of their 12 races, including two in the gold fleet. Their margin over the second-placed Spanish team was a massive 48 points. Remarkably, Menzies is just 13 years old and McGlashan 15, but the boys raced in the open division, having gained entry to the Worlds at the youth sailing world champs at Corpus Christi the month before, where they finished fifth. As boats stream onto Tauranga Harbour this Labour Weekend, marine pest specialists will be on hand to help keep unwanted stowaways at bay. The Saturday morning workshop will teach boat owners how to identify and avoid the kinds of pest that like to hitch a ride on hulls or infest ballast water. “We’ll provide a ton of information and lots of photos to raise awareness, but this is also a pretty hands-on, practical session,” say Bay of Plenty Regional Council biosecurity manager Greg Corbett. “We’ll be removing a vessel from the water with the travel lift and doing a complete hull check, clean and water blast. If there’s one thing we’re good at, it’s building boats. According to the International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) there are more than 40 million recreational boats in the world right now. And that figure continues to grow, as more and more boats make their way home from dealer showrooms each year. On the other hand, what we’re not good at is figuring out what happens to all of these boats when they come to the end of their lives. At night, or when there is fog or heavy rain, technology can help to dramatically upgrade our vison and enable us to see things that would otherwise be hidden. Radio Detection and Ranging, or radar, has been around since the Second World War and is often credited with helping to win the Battle of Britain. This technology, even in its primitive form, enabled British fighter planes to accurately intercept incoming German bombers at night. Since those early days the technology has developed hugely, and compact digital radar systems are now readily available and priced to suit even moderate-sized trailer boats and yachts. A land yacht, or sand yacht, is the universal term used to describe both cart and sport. Blokart is a type of compact land yacht designed by Paul Beckett in 1999. The first Blokarts were manufactured in Papamoa in 2000 and dominate the local market. One of our goals is to remove 50% of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in five years A 2,000ft long floating boom, a collection device to corral plastic litter floating between California and Hawaii, set out from San Francisco in September. It was heading to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch – an island of rubbish twice the size of Texas. The system was created by The Ocean Cleanup, an organisation founded by Boyan Slat, a 24-year-old innovator from the Netherlands. Boyan became passionate about cleaning the oceans at age 16 after seeing more plastic bags than fish while scuba diving in the Mediterranean Sea. Researchers with Slat’s organisation found plastic going back to the 1960s and 1970s bobbing in the garbage patch, illustrating how persistent plastic is in the environment.…

Sir Edmund Hillary’s historic Antarctic hut has been saved and restored thanks to a successful fundraising campaign and the application of coatings donated by AkzoNobel. A specialist team from the Antarctic Heritage Trust spent three months in temperatures as low as minus 40°C renovating the famous landmark, which was built in 1957. Exterior work included building a new aluminum roof coated with a special batch of the company’s Polydure® coil over the existing leaky one. Originally constructed for the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition, the hut houses more than 500 painstakingly conserved artefacts. The new aluminum roof was painted by Pacific Coil Coaters in New Zealand and installed by specialist standing seam roofer, Mike Burgess, on top of the existing roof, preserving the original building for future restoration. Each boat is placed into a fleet based on its PHRF handicap, a performance-based rating number allocated by Yachting New Zealand. This system is made possible only with club participation and sportsmanlike self-regulation. It’s like a golf handicap in the sense that the better you become, the harsher you are ranked compared to others. A boat’s total race time is simply multiplied by its PHRF handicap to give a ‘corrected time’ figure. Auckland’s Andrew Berry has just installed a Watt & Sea POD 600 Hydrogenerator on his 13.5m Elliot pilothouse yacht, Mariana. It’s the first of the units to be fitted in New Zealand. Supplied by Kiwi Yachting, the POD 600 is a new variant of the Watt & Sea Hydrogenerators – mounted on the hull. More commonly the units are transom-mounted on retractable brackets so that they can be lifted clear of the water when not in use. The new version is widely-used by race boats – from the Vendee Globe to the Volvo Ocean Race – and the technology has been tested in the most extreme conditions.
