Fuel prices are much in the news lately. As markets around the world react to the appalling actions of Russia in Ukraine, oil prices are rising fast and fuel supply is becoming constrained. For New Zealanders, that translates to pain at the fuel pump and marina bowser, something the Government has tried to address in the short term by reducing the excise tax on fuel. This will certainly provide some relief, but with war in Ukraine raging and international sanctions on Russia tightening, oil prices look set to keep rising. Any benefits of the lower tax may soon be swallowed by higher international fuel prices. Higher fuel prices are not good news for boaties, or anyone else for that matter. The UK’s first high-speed hybrid passenger ferries will join Uber Boat by Thames Clippers’ fleet in autumn 2022. 2022. The two 40m-long vessels will be built by Wight Shipyard Co on the Isle of Wight and Danfoss’ Editron division has been commissioned to power the vessels. The two new hybrid ferries, each capable of transporting up to 230 passengers, will help London achieve its ambitious target of becoming a zero-carbon city by 2030. As well as reducing environmental impact, the ferries will also provide enhanced comfort for passengers due to the lower noise and vibration levels. When operating in central London, the hybrid ferries will run on zero-emission electric propulsion, switching to biofuel power once outside the central zone.…

Leading Australian luxury motor yacht manufacturer Maritimo, has announced mtu as the official high horsepower engine option for its new flagship vessels, with select future models to follow. The agreement sees world-renowned German engine manufacturer, Rolls-Royce Power Systems’ mtu brand of engine the sole engine option for all engines from 1200mhp to 1625mhp for Maritimo. Represented locally by Penske Australia and New Zealand, various mtu engine options, with ZF gearboxes, mtu control systems, mtu joystick, and position hold options will become available in M75 Flybridge, S75 Sedan, and M600 & S600 Offshore models. The 1960s, the turbulent decade of revolution that challenged the status quo, was just about to end, but its legacy lived on. Growing up on Auckland’s North Shore and turning 14 in December 1969, I was perfectly positioned to soak up the kaleidoscopic shift in hot-rod, car and boat racing culture. Loud, brash and dressed in metallic/dayglo colours, it was ‘in ‘yer face’ and we loved it! My mates and I were into slot cars, pushbike racing and model power boat racing. INVERCARGILL-BASED STABICRAFT MARINE has been exporting its full line of welded aluminium boats to customers in North America for years. But with interest in its products growing, the company has recently leased a production space near Seattle as a step toward establishing a full production plant in the US. The expansion into the Seattle suburb of Port Angeles is the result of steadily growing demand. In December it signed the lease on a new, 1,500m2 facility at the Port of Port Angeles Airport Industrial Park that will be used to perform final assembly of boats shipped from New Zealand in kit form. Stabicraft hopes to have everything up and running in April. Stabicraft sold more than 200 boats in the US and Canada last year and is anticipating sales growth…

AUSTRALIAN MOTOR YACHT builder Maritimo’s emphasis on the large motor yacht sector is revealed with the S75 Sedan motor yacht, scheduled for launch in late 2022. The S75 Sedan is the new flagship within Maritimo’s S-Series line, joining the S51, S55 and S60 Sedans. Maritimo Design Director, Tom Barry-Cotter said, “the S75 sedan motor yacht draws from a wealth of feedback from our owners all over the world, spanning more than two years of concept development and planning.” The S75’s purpose is being a unique single-level offshore cruising motor yacht with longrange adventuring capability. An elongated hardtop overhang with black styling accents covers the alfresco deck spaces. The entire Elite AT43 syndicate consists of shareholders moving up from Ownaship’s Rayglass 3500 syndicates. OWNASHIP WELCOMES two new vessels to its fleet – an Elite AT43 from Allan Tongs, and an Isla 40 from Fountaine Pajot. Both are long-awaited and long since sold, with six shareholders in each. The entire Elite AT43 syndicate consists of shareholders moving up from Ownaship’s Rayglass 3500 syndicates. The Elite AT43 has already proven to be a highly sought-after addition to the fleet, with three hulls set to join Ownaship over the next 18 months, two of which are already fully sold. Thanks to Volvo’s IPS system it proves a doddle. Skipper Chris Smith turns the Absolute into the wind, crabs her sideways along the fairway, holds station whilst we adjust the fenders, then glides the 23-ton boat astern to nestle against pontoon as easily as buttering hot toast. The Gillard family has a long association with the Auckland boating scene. Neil’s father Harry was a keen sailor and had the 12.2m keeler Ngatiawa built by Collings & Bell in 1947. Harry sold Ngatiawa to the late Nathan Ross in 1952, whose son Clive still owns her today. The Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust Endurance22 Expedition has located the wreck of Endurance, Sir Ernest Shackleton’s ship which has not been seen since it was crushed by the ice and sank in the Weddell Sea in 1915. One hundred years after Shackleton’s death, Endurance was found at a depth of 3,008m in the Weddell Sea, within the search area defined by the expedition team before its departure from Cape Town, and approximately four miles south of the position originally recorded by Endurance’s New Zealand captain, Frank Worsley. The team worked from the South African polar research and logistics vessel, S.A. Agulhas II, owned by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment and under Master, Capt. In Emirates Team New Zealand’s 30-year history it has designed and built over 20 different race boats, but it will come as no surprise that not one of them involved R&D on tyres. This area is the biggest leap into the unknown for ETNZ’s designers working on the team’s attempt at the Wind-Powered Land Speed World Record. The man leading the charge in the area is Mechanical Engineer Tim Meldrum, a mountain biking enthusiast and one of the key designers behind the Cyclors mechanical system that helped ETNZ win back the America’s Cup in 2017. I’ve been fortunate to use a trailer boat throughout the South Island, from Lake Te Anau in the south to Golden Bay in the north. The boating opportunities are as diverse as the locations – from mountainbacked alpine lakes right through to golden beaches and warm saltwater bays. Listing my ‘favourite’ five boating destinations has proven challenging because every place I visit is unique and memorable in its own way. THE AUSTRALASIAN Institute of Marine Surveyors (AIMS) has set its sights on growing its membership in New Zealand and the wider Australasian region with the appointment of a New Zealand-based board member for the first time in its 36-year history. Good on them, I say. They extend and often double the vessel’s life, reminding us of the days when boats were built as one-off works of art before fibreglass and carbon and new-fangled chemical aids. Tom has sailed with Young America, and twice with the Italian Team Luna Rossa. He was the head coach of the Swedish America’s Cup Challenger Artemis Racing in the 35th America’s Cup and is also currently the coach for the Australian SailGP team. As Russian troops entered Ukraine last month, freight rates on key routes in the Atlantic Basin climbed steadily from a January 25th low of $5,032 per day to a current year-todate highs of $18,649 per day and rising. Ship-tracking data from satellite and land-based sources confirms this is due to a step up in demand. The surge in freight rates was driven by imports into northwest Europe. Demand for oil tanker space was already on a rising trend as the economy and oil prices recovered from depressed levels a year ago. However, as the crisis escalated, demand spiked to levels far above the upper end of its historical range. Construction of one of the largest pieces of non-roading infrastructure seen in New Zealand in decades has now reached the halfway mark in Ōpōtiki, with the town’s Mayor, Lyn Riesterer, describing progress as “outstanding.” Two years ago, the government announced that Ōpōtiki’s funding bid for an ambitious Harbour Development Project had been successful and would be supported by Kānoa – RDU, the government’s regional economic development and investment unit. The $100 million redevelopment will re-establish Ōpōtiki’s harbour, build two training walls and open a new harbour entrance while closing the existing one. When completed, it will bring many benefits to the town, including helping the region’s aquaculture industry develop even further. In the face of plummeting covid infection rates, a new ownership structure, new event features and all-new venues including a return to South Beach, expectations ran high for the 2022 Miami International Boat Show (MIBS). In spite of some breezy weather on opening day, the show did not disappoint, with a surge of new product launches helping to attract an estimated 100,000 visitors over its five-day run. Fast-forward to February 2022, a summer evening at Westhaven Marina. In the Member’s Lounge of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, Quintin Fowler seems very relaxed. He is with new friends he has made during a highly stressful sea voyage of an unusual sort. The new friends are Ted Dixon and Jenny Johnson. Like Quintin, they were on the cruising adventure of a lifetime, in Georgetown, Bahamas waiting to head south to the Panama Canal and four years into a five-year stint of world cruising when the world progressively went into lockdown in response to a new pandemic threat called Covid-19. The launch model for the VQ115 Veloce line is the result of brainstorming sessions between a Vanquish repeat client and company founder Tom Steentjes. While initial discussions were based on design concepts for a VQ90, the owner added an extra cabin, a dedicated dining area on the lower deck and two garages. The installation of the largest engines possible – a trio of MTU-Rolls-Royce 2650s mated to surface drives – will power the VQ115 Veloce to more than 50 knots, making her quite possibly the fastest aluminium yacht over 30m with non-turbine diesel engines.
