A light southerly on April 8 saw yachts competing in 500nm RNZYS Three Kings Offshore Race head out from Westhaven with the sun low behind them, caught here by Boating New Zealand photographer Roger Mills. Wired led the fleet round North Head from Equilibrium as the yachts faced the start of an incoming tide and light winds. The colourful spinnakers made a great sight as the yachts headed off up the Rangitoto Channel towards Whangaparoa. Dean Barker, Russell Coutts, Joey Allen and Matt Mason have all been a part of memorable sailing moments in history as part of the America’s Cup – however instead of tense, high-speed duels in yachts broadcast to millions around the world, the four world-class sailors passed down their knowledge to the next generation of sailors at the Harken National Secondary Schools Keelboat Championships held April 8-10. Barker lent a helping hand to Diocesan School’s sailing programme where his daughter represented the school, Mason coached the Takapuna Grammar crew with his son aboard, and the team of Coutts and Allen helped the Kristin School team. Submissions for the proposed Hākaimangō-Matiatia Marine Reserve in the Hauraki Gulf opened on 20 January and closed on Sunday, 20 March. Of the submissions processed to date, the vast majority (92%) are in support of the proposal, after a successful publicity campaign conducted by a coalition of local and national conservation groups and lobbyists. Supporters include Friends of the Hauraki Gulf, Forest & Bird, Auckland Council and others, including such notable figures as former Minister of Conservation (2002–2007) Hon Chris Carter. Just when it seemed multi-rig outboards were the recipe going forward, the focus shifted dramatically back to big V8s in 1973. The arrival of the Jim Mackay designed 8.5-metre (27-foot) MacKay hull Old Crow for Spinner Black, equipped with a finely-tuned 454 cu in LS7 Chevrolet V8 from Black’s engine shop, changed all that. This combo and its sister ships were to set the benchmark for speed and endurance over the next four to five years. The Bavaria was certainly eye-catching in the marina: it was a bit of a surprise to pull up to the finger outside owner Peter Boddie’s apartment at Gulf Harbour and see something which looked like a mini superyacht, with sleek lines, a low-profile cabintop and a strip of through-hull windows. Named after the river that flows past the German yard, the RYCK 280 is designed as a utility boat by iconic naval architect Bill Dixon in conjunction with Hanse. It’s hard to avoid the comparisons with other rugged day-boats such as the Axopar 28, but RYCK is aiming more at the family market with the 280. The latest Allan Tongs build has joined Ownaship’s Auckland -based boat share fleet. Sapphire is the first of five AT43’s on order for Ownaship, with this and the next build due in December 2022 fully sold. The Pursuit 8 Amphibious is designed and built by Auckland company Assault, which manufactures a range of conventional RIBs for Family Boats. It’s a sturdy, practical boat which both performs on the water and is easy to launch and stow. The design is a development of the current Pursuit 9m and 11m models, but with a completely re-designed hull and transom for optimised performance with the integrated three-wheel amphibious system developed by Orion Marine. Manufactured in South Africa for Takacat by Stingray Marine, the Predator T640P is a catamaran RIB with a rugged GRP hull and good quality Hypalon tubes. It’s a narrow, stepped-tunnel design with large volume wrap-around tubes divided into six separate compartments for safety. Catamaran RIBs are not exactly a dime a dozen in New Zealand, so the Predator attracts quite a bit of attention on and off the water, as we found out when members of the Police Maritime Unit stopped by the boat ramp to give the RIBs a thorough once-over. When the Grand Final of SailGP Season 2 got under way on San Francisco Bay on Sunday 27 March, the previous 47 races in the 11-month, eight-event series arguably counted for nothing. The NZ Electric Boat Company runs a fleet of electric hire boats on the Kerikeri River. Company founder Chris Claydon also imports and distributes a range of marine electric propulsion systems, including bolt-on sail- and pod-drives, hybrid systems and electric inboards from Dutch company Combi, plus electric outboards from Torqeedo and newcomer EZoutboard, one of which is featured here. The EZoutboard that Chris demonstrated is the 48-volt EZ 20 model with a nominal 20hp equivalent power rating, optimised for high speed – much higher than most other ‘portable’ electric outboards. Alice was designed by J.G. Trevithick NIMA, the Technical Master at Auckland Grammar School, for Charles Beavan of Calliope Road Devonport and built by Robert Logan Sr in December 1887 at his yard at the foot of Anne Street, Devonport in his customary ‘lifeboat’ triple-diagonal strip layered planking.
