It’s very simple: your reel’s drag is a safety valve. When a large hooked fish races off, the drag slops to allow line to be pulled from the reel rather than snapping the line from excessive pressure. However, several factors must be considered when setting drag pressure, and assorted ‘fishing experts’ have different ideas on what’s best! Here’s what has worked well for me over the years. When water is involved, the possibility of drowning exists. The severity of the risk is extreme so it’s not something the sport takes lightly. In sports boat classes the occupants sit in open cockpits with no seatbelts or restraints to hold them into their seats. In larger canopy boats five-or six-point harnesses are a prerequisite, along with re-breathing air devices. When rigging open cockpit boats, many competitors opt for good-quality, high-backed seats for added support/safety in the event of a roll over or crash. Personal safety equipment for all classes includes crash helmets and life jackets. Crash helmets need to be higlow orange – easily achieved with the application of vinyl signwriting. Bauza was the official cartographer on the Malaspina Expedition – a five-year (1789 - 1794) voyage of scientific research and discovery. A Spanish initiative, it comprised two 36m corvettes – the Descubierta and the Atrevida – commanded by Don Alessandro Malaspina and Don Joseph de Bastemente respectively. On board were multi-disciplinary teams of experts – including surveyors, astronomers, and mathematicians. Tony Kendall met Peggy Wallbridge while both were racing Arrow class dinghies in Glendowie in the early 1950s. On larger yachts, the same respect is owed to the mainsheet and its traveller. Several fatal accidents in recent years have brought anguish to crew and heartache to families when the police arrived with tragic news. In 2023 a person was fatally injured on a yacht returning to New Zealand from the Pacific. But this 12m (39-foot) Kevin Dibley-designed canting-keeler has taken longer than most, with 30 years elapsing from the lines going on the plan to her bright-orange hull hitting the water in late 2023. When I sourced the replacement motors for Divecat I had no idea what propellers would be needed. Of course, these second-hand Yamahas came complete with a set of 15½ by 17-inch propellers (15½-inch diameter and 17-inch pitch) but those were suitable for the boat that they were originally fitted to. As anyone who has been down this route knows, selecting the right prop for your specific boat and desired performance is part science, part mathematics and, perhaps, part dark arts and personal preference. We met up with the Fulcrum crew on a bright autumn day with just the right amount of breeze to have a great sail. She’s not hard to spot: there aren’t that many bright-orange 38-footers out there.
