After disappointing results in Auckland and Sydney, the Black Foils bounced back to take second for the event, behind Canada. Although they led the pack at the end of Day One, light, flukey winds challenged the teams on Day Two and in the final the Black Foils squandered a good lead by falling off the foils. Nonetheless, second place was enough to see them back near the top of the leaderboard heading to San Francisco. On a beautifully sunny spring day with a steady 10-knot wind, I was at the Takapuna Beach boat ramp, chatting with a young sailor launching his International Moth. He was training for the International Moth World Championships, scheduled for Manly Beach in January. I told him had inherited Flotsam, one of the I first two Moths built in New Zealand. Dynamic duo Race management is one of those critical jobs that has to be done just right and where accuracy is everything. With more than 43 years of experience, John Parrish – ably assisted by wife Linda – is among this country’s top Race Officers. This is their story. Born in England in 1948, John was the second child of Ken and Joan Parrish. This article was prompted by an email from Norm Wagener of Houhora about his little launch Silver Bell which he knew had a rich history in the Far North. Local word of mouth had her built by Bailey & Lowe for the Yates family of Parengarenga Harbour. The Wagener family themselves have a rich history there too and are connected to the Subritzky family.
