In the latest independent readership survey, Boating New Zealand’s print publication—this magazine—saw a 25% surge in readership in the last six months, which means nearly 100,000 people read the magazine each month. That’s the best readership figure for Boating New Zealand since 2016, and while it’s just a snapshot and not the whole year, and it’s also true magazines are seeing a general resurgence worldwide after years of decline, it’s still fantastic news. The all-white vessel was crouched down on the tarmac waiting for me at Takapuna boat ramp across from the Beach Café, where Jarrod Hall and the crew were enjoying some refreshment. Called Prevail, the boat has a lot of presence, its raised sheerline forward and vertical windscreen giving it some real authority – even squatting down on its wheels and resting its keel on the deck, the bow towered over my head. Heavy-duty rubbing strakes should afford the hull sides useful protection when coming alongside a jetty, and there are heavy-duty cleats fore and aft and amidships. One of Europe’s major waterways, the 814km Rhône rises in the Swiss Alps. It’s boosted by multiple tributaries along the way and drops 2,208m over its length before emptying into the Mediterranean near Arles in southern France. By divine design, it flows through the heart of Burgundy and Provence. Over the millennia the river’s been a strategic factor in many cultures and civilizations. Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans were among the region’s earliest inhabitants. The Rhône served them well, particularly the all-conquering Romans. The waterway was a fortuitous conduit for moving troops and supplies between the Mediterranean and Gaul – and thereafter throughout the continent. It lubricated the Empire’s relentless expansion.
