As of Saturday, 25 October 2025,19 new marine protection areas have been established across the Hauraki Gulf, managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC). Kirsty Prior, Operations Manager Marine, states that DOC’s focus this summer is on educating the public about the new rules and boundaries.
A new team of marine and community rangers, along with seasonal staff, will engage with the community at events, boat clubs, and on the water. The new law aims to protect crucial underwater habitats, allowing marine life to thrive and contributing to a healthier Gulf.
