IT WAS ALREADY cold in New York when I boarded the Norwegian Escape, one of the largest cruise ships in the world. Destination: Bahamas, where I’d heard the water was bluer than Bradley Cooper’s eyes. But Laura, my photographer, and I were here for one thing: to see how 5,800 people got fed (and fed, and fed) 24 hours a day.
11:16 A.M.
The drinking starts early: mojitos, rum punch, piña coladas. On this ship, 29,806 beers, 5,500 bottles of wine, and over 1,000 handles of liquor get drunk each week. The first bar we come across is two-deep already.
12:45 P.M.
For lunch there’s a massive buffet: pizza, burgers, pasta. The Escape serves 22,000 meals daily out of 18 kitchens, which I will call galleys from now on because,…
