N MONDAY, October 24, 1949, a small car was taking the boxer Jimmy Green from Warrington to Leeds so that he could box Gus Foran for the North-Central Area bantamweight title.
As well as Green, his second, Cyril Shuttleworth, his trainer, James Collin, and his manager, Pete Ray, were also in the car.
As it approached Salteye Corner, near Eccles, a known accident blackspot, it skidded, careered across the road, and crashed head-on with an oncoming lorry.
The occupants were all thrown out into the road as the body of the car was ripped open. Green was severely injured, as were both Collin and Shuttleworth. Ray was not so lucky, losing his life.
