GOOD DEEDS Last summer, the BSA asked Scouts to share how they were fulfilling their oath “to help other people at all times.” The initiative was called the Summer of Service. Scouts had to pick a project, Good Turn or random act of kindness; complete it; and tell the BSA about it. A total of 734 projects were reported with 13,398 people participating, contributing 71,043 service hours. The good deeds included food drives, Eagle Scout service projects, community cleanups and flag ceremonies — you know, things Scouts have been doing since the beginning of the BSA in 1910. Some acts were simple, like baking treats for firefighters, while others required weeks of work, like doing yardwork in a local cemetery. SCOUT OUTINGS The U.S. National Park Service offers a Junior Ranger program at almost all of its more than 400 parks. Participants can do activities, explore the park and earn a badge. Pack 109 of Rock Hill, South Carolina, visited Kings Mountain National Military Park during National Park Week in April. During that week, the park puts on a Junior Ranger Day. The Cub Scouts and their families, who were camping at a nearby state park, hiked to the national park, picked up trash, made candles and learned about what makes the park special. During the American Revolutionary War, the patriot militia defeated loyalist militia in the Battle of Kings Mountain.
