Welcome back to Word Up! This month we’re exploring ideograms, pictograms and logograms. The word ideogram comes from the Greek ‘idea’, which means ‘idea’(!) and ‘grapho’, which means ‘to write’. If you tuned in last month, you know that where a word comes from is called its etymology. Can you guess the etymology of pictogram? How about logogram? (Hint: ‘logo’ means ‘word’.)
IDEOGRAMS
Ideograms are symbols that represent ideas or concepts without needing to be tied to a specific language, word or phrase. For instance, numerals and mathematical symbols are ideograms. 1,2,3 represent ‘one, two, three’, ‘uno, dos, tres’, or any other language’s system of counting. + always means addition, and = always means ‘equals’, no matter what language you use!
