Haitian President Jovenel Moise was assassinated in a night-time assault by “highly trained and heavily armed” killers, according to the nation’s interim prime minister, Claude Joseph.
The attack by the unidentified group took place at the presidential residence at around 1am in the capital, Port-Au-Prince, Joseph said.
First lady Martine Moise was also shot in the attack and was taken to the hospital. Luis Abinader, president of the Dominican Republic, which borders Haiti, said via Twitter she died, and sent his condolences.
Joseph’s statement didn’t elaborate on the first lady’s health condition.
Some of the assailants spoke Spanish, Joseph said in an earlier statement, implying that they were foreigners. Haiti’s National Police and other authorities are working to keep order, he said.
