SOUTH Africa’s property buying boom fuelled by low interest rates is not going to slow down any time soon, according to Finder.com’s SA Reserve Bank (SARB) repo rate forecast report released this week. The Monetary Policy Committee interest rate decision is due to be heard tomorrow. Call for security at schools to be beefed up Sisonke Mlamla sisonke.mlamla@inl.co.za THE killing of a Grade 6 maths teacher at the Heinz Park Primary School in Philippi yesterday has left the community and teacher unions calling for the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) to beef up security at schools. Thulani Manqoyi, 53, was shot dead in the parking area of the school while sitting in his vehicle. Police spokesperson André Traut said the incident occurred at about 7.45am. Traut said two suspects fled the scene and had yet to be arrested. WCED spokesperson Bronagh Hammond said Manqoyi, who had been teaching at the school since 2008, was shot dead after parking his car in the school parking area before the school day began. VIWE Kobokana is the newly elected chairperson of the Stellenbosch University Students’ Representative Council (SRC). Kobokana, who was elected earlier this month, said the reality of being elected to lead the student organisation had not yet sunk in, but she was excited about the challenge. Kobokana is a final-year BSc Human Life Sciences student from Qonce (King William’s Town). She is no stranger to student leadership, having served as the transformation officer of the 2020/2021 SRC. Despite having electricity in their homes again, Delft residents living in Leiden are apprehensive about how long their lights will stay on this time, knowing how rife the issue of illegal electricity connections is in their area. Gender-based violence (GBV) is not an easy issue to tackle. However, that’s not an excuse for inaction. With the constant increase in GBV cases in South Africa, we must al take action against the scourge – companies included, regardless of their size. We are all familiar with the gruesome realities of domestic violence thanks to the headlines and hashtags. However, homes are not the only theatres of GBV: a 2018 study in South Africa estimated that nearly a third of women were victims of unwanted sexual advances in their workplaces. Relationship and events manager Tania Bailey said Waves for Change operated Beach Safe Hubs in coastal communities affected by violence, poverty and conflict, where mental health services were often stigmatised and under-resourced. “Working in partnership with local community members, we identify, train and provide resources to community coaches to deliver the surf therapy service,” Bailey said.
