A Zionist is someone who subscribes to the proposition that the Jews, having suffered so much persecution for so long in so many places and from so many people, deserve their own independent homeland where their own writ runs and where, supposedly, they can be left in peace.
This is a very old idea that seems to me to be completely reasonable to the point of being obvious.
Before 1948, many possible places were considered for a Jewish homeland.
