FOLLOWING its discussions on baboon management with other spheres of government last week, the City now intends to engage affected residents and businesses to discuss sustainable proposals for baboon management. At last week’s meeting, a joint task team was established with representatives from SANParks, CapeNature, and the City to govern baboon management on the Cape Peninsula. The City’s Urban Baboon Programme, managed by NCC Environmental Services, comes to an end in June next year. Forestry and Fisheries and Environmental Affairs Minister Barbara Creecy said the team would meet within the next two weeks to establish time lines and work on a memorandum of understanding before the programme expired. THE Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) has upheld, in part, an appeal against the decision by the same court dismissing an application by Thembinkosi Mekuto regarding his sentence for a spate of charges relating to an armed robbery at a bank in Hermanus 15 years ago. Mekuto was one of five men who were sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a security guard outside a bank in Hermanus. The incident took place in December 2007, where the guard was shot in the head and chest and died on the scene. The five men were carrying firearms when they approached two security guards on duty while they were transporting money to a bank. The City’s Safety and Security Investigation Unit (SSIU) has dealt with another contention over its legitimacy, this time by Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Ronald Lamola, who said there was no provision for the establishment of such a unit in South African legislation. Education MEC David Maynier has said that a Cape Town teacher who sexually assaulted a pupil five years ago has finally been suspended and will face a disciplinary hearing. Teacher Ayanda Ntuthu continued teaching at the same school until last month despite having been convicted on two counts of sexual assault in March this year at the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court. It emerged that the Western Cape Department of Education (WCED) had said it had been unaware that Ntuthu had been prosecuted and found guilty until after the event and that the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said its responsibilities did not extend to informing the department about the prosecution. Russian forces said yesterday they had struck a site in western Ukraine storing large amounts of weapons supplied by the US and European countries, as the battle intensified for the key eastern city of Severodonetsk. The return of a woman who had been missing for about a month has caused an uproar on social media as residents demanded an explanation about the disappearance, while the family remained silent. According to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD), the 2022 influenza season started in week 17 – the week starting April 25 – when the influenza detection rate among patients in a pneumonia surveillance breached the epidemic threshold as determined by the Moving Epidemic Method. A STUDY by UCT’s Children’s Institute (CI) shows that many crimes against children – such as rape, abandonment and sexual and physical abuse – still go unnoticed and unreported. The study, titled “Closing the gaps in services that respond to violence against women and children”, was conducted by CI researchers Professor Shanaaz Matthews, Dr Neziswa Titi and Lucy Jamieson.
