Estimates from the Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) released by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) show that it is tougher for unemployed women to find jobs than it is for unemployed men. The survey’s data showed that only 4.9% of unemployed women found jobs in Quarter 4 of 2020 compared with Quarter 3 of the same year, while 7.1% of unemployed men found a job after being unemployed in the previous quarter. The survey also found that while people in short-term unemployment were more likely to find employment than those who have been unemployed for a year or longer, the long-term unemployed should not give up looking for work. FOUR alleged July unrest instigators who made their first appearances at the Durban Magistrates Court yesterday, were released on R3 000 bail. Their cases were postponed as three of the accused still had to acquire legal representation. Menzi Blose, 43, Mathews Ntjonto, 51, Mthokozisi Gwala, 37, and Sibusiso Ngubane, 29, are facing charges of conspiracy to commit public violence, incitement to commit public violence, and incitement to commit arson. Only Blose had a lawyer for the first appearance. The three other accused were granted an opportunity to seek Legal Aid representation before the matter returns to court on August 26. CAPE Town-born singer and songwriter Jonathan Butler says he was racially profiled at American restaurant Goose & Gander after the establishment’s manager followed him to his car to find out if they had paid a tip for the waiter who served him and his friends. Goose & Gander is a restaurant in Napa Valley, California, also known as wine country. According to Butler, the manager followed him and his group of friends back to their car, thinking they hadn’t tipped their server. “I must say we had a great dinner. Several civil society environmental organisations, supporters and residents gathered at the Paarden Eiland entrance to the harbour to protest against offshore oil and gas extraction activities. They asked the government to protect the livelihoods of coastal communities affected by these activities. The group, led and organised by eco-justice organisation The Green Connection, said this action came after failure to meaningfully engage those affected by numerous development projects taking place along the South African coastline, as well as inland. Some of the supporting organisations included Masifundise, African Climate Alliance, Khoi San Research Centre, Ubuntu Rural Women, and Extinction Rebellion. Current financial constraints facing the Health and Wellness Department mean there are no immediate plans to increase the number of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) ambulances serving the community of Atlantis. This was Health and Wellness MEC Nomafrench Mbombo’s written reply to GOOD MPL Shaun August about whether the EMS has a plan to allocate more ambulances to Wesfleur Hospital. August had also asked about the current ambulance allocation from the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to the hospital. The credibility of a warning statement recorded by slain Anti-Gang Unit detective Charl Kinnear when he interviewed an accused in the murder of advocate Pete Mihalik came under the spotlight at the trial of Mihalik’s alleged killers. ORGANISED crime detectives are investigating the deaths of three Zimbabwean nationals whose bodies were found in Mbekweni, Paarl. The police have called for anyone with information related to the shootings to contact their nearest police station. Provincial police spokesperson Novela Potelwa said the detectives were probing the murders after police were called out to Sakhelwe Street at about 5am on Sunday. “One body was lying inside the vehicle, another behind the same vehicle, and the third one inside a shack on the premises. Last Thursday, I received a call from a farmer friend from Philippi saying she wants to give me a ton of broccoli. I went with my son’s bakkie to the farm where the broccoli was loaded by the farmer and his staff with a forklift. With this heavy load I arrived home and my wife Tina cooked some and it was delicious.
