I write on behalf of New Contrast, South Africa’s longest-lived literary journal. Founded in 1960 as Contrast, we publish both new and established writers. We are multilingual, publishing in English, Afrikaans, Afrikaaps, Xhosa, etc.
The two decades of the internet era have hurt us, with declining subscriptions, notwithstanding that we offer a digital subscription option, and have a website and social media presence. We face bankruptcy and closing down. Sadly, all our funding applications to the National Arts Council and Western Cape culture department have been rejected.
We appeal to Cape Argus readers to both subscribe and donate so we can continue to serve South African literature. Please go to https://www.newcontrast.net for details.…
