Convicted killer Makhi Kapa, who was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 15 years in jail by the Western Cape High Court, has won leave to appeal for a lesser sentence at the Constitutional Court. However, in a majority ruling written by Justice Steven Majiedt, the Concourt dismissed Kapa’s appeal against his conviction. Kapa, who was found guilty of a murder committed in Cape Town in 2018, argued in the Concourt that hearsay evidence infringed on his right to a fair trial. The central issue in Kapa’s application was whether the hearsay statement of Bomikazi Dasi, who died before the original trial began, was correctly admitted as evidence. The increased public and expert scrutiny of Eskom’s operations in recent months has struck a nerve with the utility as Eskom board chairperson Mpho Makwana revealed that the power utility was seeking to increase its credibility with the public by contracting an international consultancy to validate the execution of its turnaround plans. POLICE have arrested four suspects after two people were kidnapped from a home in Empress Tree Street, Thubelitsha, in Delft over the weekend. According to Hawks spokesperson Zinzi Hani, the victims were kidnapped on Sunday and held captive in a house in Crescent Road, Philippi East. “This comes after a multi-disciplinary provincial kidnapping team consisting of the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation together with Provincial Organised Crime, Crime Intelligence and Special Task Force reacted to information received. “The suspects also made off with their vehicle (blue Ford Ranger XLT bakkie) which was later recovered at Covid informal settlement near Faure Drive. The man, who may not be named to protect his minor daughter, appeared in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on several charges of assault on Tuesday. A pony named Dusty, spotted in ill health on the N7 after he had walked more than 40 kilometres, has been taken to a place of safety. The Cape of Good Hope (CoGH) SPCA received a call on January 21 from the City’s Emergency Services requesting assistance after Law Enforcement responded to a call from a member of the public who reported the pony in extremely poor condition while it was being walked from Melkbosstrand past Morningstar on the N7. The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate began resurfacing a section of the inbound carriageway of FW de Klerk Boulevard yesterday. The City says the work will continue until the end of June this year, barring any unexpected delays or inclement weather. The trial of sex trafficking trio Edward, 42, Leandre, 38, and Yannick Ayuk, 32, continued yesterday in the Western Cape High Court where another victim broke her silence after years in hiding. The victim, who has two children with the State witness, Monday Daniels, spoke about how she assisted Leandre and others to get more clients. The woman was trafficked from Springbok to the Ayuks’ Brooklyn house where the “sex for drugs” services were traded. THE Student Representative Council (SRC) at UCT said it would close all dining halls until management provides alternative accommodation for “stranded and squatting” students. In a statement, the UCT SRC said the residence issue had been due to fee blocks and other related matters. The SRC said the Student Housing Department issued withdrawals of residence offers to students who owe fees “thus removing the essential resource of accommodation to complete studies at UCT”.
