I strongly support Alex Tabisher’s call to us all to read more (“Cape Argus”, March 1) – it hopefully helps us to understand others, ourselves and life.
However, he seems to have a narrow focus on the narrative of “Caucasians” who “scourged” the “darker” people, the implication being that nobody else did such nasty things.
A quick look at the Bible puts Egyptians in the same frame, and wider reading shows that Persians, Romans, Aztecs and Asians, and even our own King Shaka, slaughtered and enslaved their unfortunate neighbours. It seems to have been a general human condition.
Admittedly, Caucasians got around to more places in the world, but I think the real reason they draw so much criticism is that they were the first to bring in anti-slavery laws,…
