Five people, including a 6-year-old girl, were killed in two separate shack fires, in Phola Park in Philippi and SST section in Town Two, Khayelitsha. Khayelitsha Development Forum (KDF) chairperson Ndithini Tyhido blamed the City for “not caring about black lives”. Town Two residents were woken by a raging fire early on Sunday. Two people were killed and about 25 were left homeless. The City’s Fire & Rescue Service reported that the distress call was received shortly after midnight. By 2am, the fire had been extinguished. The Western Cape High Court has dismissed Part A of an application to interdict a state-capture-connected company’s controversial contract with the province’s Infrastructure Department. The company, Royal Security, which is linked to Durban businessperson Roy Moodley, received a R282 million security contract from the department. The company was among those flagged in the State Capture Commission’s report. Seal Security, a rival bidder that failed to win the two-year security services contract at properties owned by the provincial government, made allegations of serious irregularities in the tender process. Police have confirmed the suspension of Deputy President Paul Mashatile’s VIP protection unit officers accused of brutally assaulting three men on the N1 in Johannesburg last week. The attack was caught on camera by a passenger travelling on the highway. The officers were shown alighting from two vehicles, pulling the driver out of a blue VW Polo and assaulting him. Two other passengers were also assaulted. According to police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, all eight police officers who were involved in the N1 assault case have been suspended in terms of the SAPS disciplinary regulations as of Monday this week. THE City has reopened the second cremator at the Maitland Crematorium following maintenance that started on April 24. The reopening comes after the cremator received the necessary authorisation from the Air Quality Control authorities and passed the required stack tests that measure air quality emissions. The City said the Maitland Crematorium was now in full operation, starting this week. The crematorium is scheduled to operate 24 hours, seven days a week “to assist in this period of high demand”. “With both of the City’s cremators fully functional, the cremation capacity has returned to normal. Two hundred firefighters and 14 managers dubbed “Mzanzi 1 Hotshots” landed at the Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport South Africa on Sunday, receiving a deserved heroes welcome following their 34-day mission in Alberta, Canada. Two teams, both consisting of 200 firefighters each, left for Canada following a request from the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre in terms of the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Canada and South Africa.
