The THREE-day taxi imbizo, during which the Minibus Taxi Task Team (MBTTT) signed an agreement, concluded on Wednesday. The Western Cape government, Santaco-WC and the City of Cape Town formed the team, which also included the national Transport Department. The task team was formed to avoid taxi violence. Santaco had missed meetings before it embarked on an eight-day stayaway at the beginning of August. The taxi body, City and province had been at loggerheads for weeks after the strike, with Santaco approaching the high court to file an interdict against taxi impoundments. A CLASS of 100 pupils from Grade 8 to Grade 11 at Simanyene High School in Strand were awarded by Safer South Africa Foundation for completing a programme aimed at shaping their lives for the better – all in the belief that no child is born a criminal. During the course of the programme the students were taken into three different sectors – police stations, courts and jails – just so they can see how the process of justice works and how offenders are treated. After much speculation, the former secretary-general of the ANC, Ace Magashule has launched a new party, adding to the growing list of parties on the centre-left of the political spectrum. THE case in which SA Clothing and Textile Workers’ Union (Sactwu) sued Independent Media Consortium (IMC), formerly the Sekunjalo Independent Media Consortium (SIM), has been adjourned to next week Monday. The adjournment follows the emergence of new email evidence that the union’s lawyers want to analyse before continuing with the matter. Sactwu sued IMC for R300 million, which it claims is the capital plus interest on a R150 million investment agreement that the union alleges was a loan. A report by Cape Town Air Access (CTAA) has revealed that last year, the Western Cape economy received a cash injection of more than R24 billion, solely from international arrivals through Cape Town International Airport. CTAA, an air-route development initiative by Wesgro, the provincial tourism, trade and investment agency, released updated figures estimating how many international passengers travelling into the province duly contributed to the economy. Over the years, Wesgro, the Western Cape government and the City of Cape Town have emphasised how essential the aviation industry is to the tourism sector in the province.
