DA FEDERAL Council chairperson Helen Zille has accused the ANC of wanting to destroy education through the implementation of the Basic Education Laws Amendment Bill (Bela Bill). Zille was one of the speakers from mostly conservative parties, which included the DA, ACDP, AfriForum, and Freedom Front Plus, that protested against the adoption of the bill in its current form in Parliament. Civil society groups such as Solidariteit and Kaapse Forum were also present at the protest. The protest came before the National Assembly’s meeting on adopting the bill, which would cost about R16 billion to implement. Police have destroyed around five tons of drugs worth an estimated R800 million. These were drugs that were confiscated during day-to-day policing operations across the country. Speaking at the destruction operation yesterday, the national police commissioner, General Fannie Masemola said drugs destroyed include heroin, mandrax and dagga. He said yesterday’s operation is the third in the financial year, with the most recent in Cape Town last month, where drugs valued at R170m were destroyed. “This drug bust happened in August 2022 when Ebrahim Kara, Elias Radebe, and Meshack Ngobese were arrested in Cape Town after a truck transporting more than 600 blocks of cocaine was stopped by police and the drugs were discovered hidden in false wooden boards. “This matter was finalised, and Kara was handed down an eight-year sentence,…

More people have claimed that tombstone company M&Y Tombstone and Granite Works have scammed them. Sister newspaper Weekend Argus reported in February that several customers had lost thousands of rand after paying the company to erect tombstones for their loved ones at Gloria Memorial Cemetery in Ottery. Recently, two more people came forward with claims that they had lost money through the company. Nosi Sikweyiya said she first came across M&Y Tombstone and Granite Works when they were referred to them by Gloria Memorial Cemetery in 2021. After burying her sister-in-law at the cemetery, M&Y was referred to them with claims that if they were thinking of erecting a tombstone, they were the only company that was allowed to assist them. A suspected robber was shot and wounded while trying to hijack a car to flee the scene, in Brooklyn. The man and his accomplices had allegedly robbed a shop in Koeberg Road on Wednesday afternoon. As they fled the scene they tried to hijack a vehicle and one got shot while four managed to get away. Maitland Community Policing Forum chairperson Justin Kumlehn said: “There was an armed robbery at OK Foods. They then fled the shop and attempted to hijack a getaway vehicle and during that hijacking, someone was shot. President Cyril Ramaphosa will meet with US president Joe Biden next Friday to discuss the role the African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa) will play in deepening trade and investment on the continent. Ramaphosa’s spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, said the Agoa summit would strengthen relations between the US and Africa. The preferential trade agreement has been in existence for more than 20 years and has been extended several times. The second annual report for the Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) Response Fund1 was released yesterday. It reflects the fund’s efforts over the past year in combating GBVF and what the fund’s focus will be for the year ahead. Launched by President Cyril Ramaphosa in February 2021, the fund has since inception allocated R69 million to more than 160 community-based organisations (CBOs).
