THREE search and rescue volunteers were robbed at gunpoint on Lion’s Head on Sunday in the latest crime incident in Table Mountain National Park. In the last two months, more than 20 such incidents have been reported. Police spokesperson Wesley Twigg said the suspects were yet to be apprehended. Mike Muller, chairperson of South African Rescue South Africa (Sarza), said the armed robbery was carried out just after 8.20pm on Sunday following the rescue of an injured hiker on Lion’s Head. SIX families facing eviction by a private property owner have met with the City of Cape Town for mediation, calling for the properties in Searle Street, District Six, which have been occupied by their families for over 100 years, to be expropriated. Tygerberg Hospital has officially unveiled its new cancer-fighting machine, the Varian TrueBeam linear accelerator (LINAC). The machine produces high-energy particles or waves in the form of beams that destroy or damage cancer cells located in a specific part of the patient’s body. The beams then shrink the tumour, or prevent the tumour from growing back after it has been removed with an operation. A single session on the machine takes about 15 to 30 minutes and most patients can complete their treatment course on an outpatient basis.
